Seed oils are way more harmful than you may think
Seed oils are way more harmful than you may think
• Processed seed oils were first manufactured in the 20th century as a farming waste product.
Somehow they’ve been “normalized” for use in food.
• Seed oil production uses petroleum-based solvents and chemicals for deodorization and
processing.
• They contain high concentrations of omega-6 fatty acids, which promote chronic inflammation and
are linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.¹
• Seed oils oxidize (think rust) during cooking, producing harmful compounds that cause damage to
DNA, proteins, and cells.²
• Most seed oils are made from genetically modified (GMO) crops and contain pesticide residues.
• While the body does need small amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, did you realize that 25 to 30
percent of your calories come from these fats on an ultra-processed diet? Ultra-processed foods
(UPFs) contain the worst quality omega-6 fats, which do not promote health.
Common ultra-processed foods with seed oils
Seed oils are a common ingredient in UPFs as they are cheap and extend the shelf life of food products.
Here are common UPFs packed with harmful seed oils:
• Cookies
• Chips
• Salad dressings
• Margarines and spreads
• Condiments
• Ready-made dips
• Cereal
• Baked goods
• Fried foods
• Frozen french fries, onion rings, tater tots
• Candies and chocolates
• Ice cream
These oils are even found in foods marketed as healthy, such as protein bars, hummus, granola, and nut butter.
How to spot seed oils
Seed oils are listed using alternative names to make identifying these harmful oils difficult for consumers.
Look out for these ingredients:
• Vegetable oil
• Corn oil
• Soybean oil
• Canola oil
• Cottonseed oil
• Rice bran oil
• Margarine
INGREDIENTS: CORN, VEGETABLE OIL (CORN, CANOLA, AND/OR SUNFLOWER OIL);

• Extra-virgin olive oil
• Cold-pressed coconut oil
• Avocado oil
• Grass-fed butter
• Ghee
• Lard
• Duck fat
• Grass-fed beef tallow
