The Sacred City of Perperikon
Rich stratigraphy
The Fortress of Perperikon is located 20 kilometres north-east of the town of Kardjali in Southern Bulgaria. This archaeological ensemble is typical for its rich stratigraphy, with the earliest discovered strata dating to the Iron Age. The fortification, which was built in antiquity, had been continuously developed and reconstructed through the Middle Ages: documents from the 13th and 14th centuries mention it under the name of Hyperperikon

Perperikon was built some 7 000 years ago
The first serious archaeological work on Perperikon was done as late as 1979 - 1982, although its large-scale study has been going on for over just two years.
In 2000 a project called 'TheTopology Of Faith" won a competition held by the New Bulgarian University. The project was headed by Senior Research Associate, Doctor of Economy Nickolai Ovcharov and Associate Professor, Doctor Valeria Foil from the Institute of Thracian Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Important religious-worship and military centre
The Fortress is located on a broad and not very high rocky hill, with the citadel erected on the summit. The site of the castle is immediately below, and the substructure is located on the lower flat terrace. In the valley, beneath the Fortress, the remains of a mediaeval monastery were discovered, which, according to existing data, had been an important religious-worship and military centre.

The capital of an ancient civilisation
Recently, the excavations at the site revealed that the grandiose religious centre Perperikon was built some 3,500 years ago.
Bulgarian archaeologists began exploring the ancient site two weeks ago. They disclosed that Perperikon was the capital of an ancient civilisation called "The Mountain people".
Some pottery with pentacles on it was found and experts claim the five-pointed stars might have been the symbol of the civilisation.

A monumental building and an ancient temple
The Bulgarian archaeologists also found a monumental building and an ancient temple with marble columns. At the beginning of the excavations the archaeologists found a human skeleton, which was believed to be of soldier defending Perperikon.
In ancient Greek history the Perperikon sanctuary was as important as that of Apollo at Delphi.
