Subaru would be prepared to scrap active transmissions if Suzuki agreed to build a World Rally Car and contest the World Championship.
The offer was made by David Lapworth, the British director of the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team, as the debate over the sport’s future intensified in response to an FIA suggestion that the non-turbo Super 2000 class could supplant WR Cars.
Lapworth conceded that some change to the technical regulations could be desirable and that a longer-term solution to the twin problems of rule stability and car manufacturer commitment was necessary.
“We’d all drop active diffs for 2006 if Suzuki said they’d join in. I think we should be striving to get a rolling two-year, reciprocal agreement over the important principles. If we can get that, we can sit down and make a long-term agreement with the manufacturers who were interested,” Lapworth suggested.
Active, computer-controlled differentials are a vital element of a competitive rally car and are already limited in the WRC2 category.
