McLaren team boss Ron Dennis effectively pointed the finger of blame at Lewis Hamilton following the pits fiasco that ultimately led to Fernando Alonso's demotion from pole position in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Dennis was unhappy with the championship leader for not listening to instructions before the driver was made to wait in the pits by the refueling Alonso.
The delay meant Hamilton was unable to go out for a final 'flying lap' while Alonso snatched pole from his team-mate with his last qualifying run.
"The fuel-burn characteristics mean there is a small advantage which we play from driver to driver according to the nature of the circuit," Dennis explained.
Tensions
"In this instance, it was Fernando's time to get the advantage of the longer fuel burn.
"The arrangement was that we're down at the end of the pitlane (with Hamilton ahead of Alonso), so we reverse positions in the first lap.
"That didn't occur as arranged. That was somewhat disappointing and caused some tensions on the pitwall.
"We were, from that moment on, out of sequence because the cars were in the wrong place on the circuit and that unfolded into the pitstops.
"It complicated the situation into the result, which was Lewis not getting his final timed lap."
Conciliatory
Commenting before the stewards final decision was announced, Dennis was more conciliatory when admitted that the team 'got it wrong'.
"It looked more dramatic because there are two guys going for pole," he added.
"What happened, and the consequences of what happened, has cost one of our drivers the opportunity of having another lap to get on pole position. That's a fact.
"We try to run these things tight, but we got it wrong. We did not do what we should have done as a team.
"We've two drivers on the front row, but it wasn't as clean an operation as we would have liked it to be.
"If you think it was deliberate, you can think what you want."
