The Thracian Tomb near Kazanlak
This remarkable cupola tomb from IV c. BC was found accidentally in 1944 near the city of Kazanlak at the geographical center of Bulgaria, in a region known as "the Bulgarian Valley of the Kings", where many other tombs and temples of lesser importance from that period were found. Nearby is also the capital of the Thracian king Sevt or Seutes III - Seutopolis.
What qualifies this particular tomb for the UNESCO list is the perfectly preserved painted ceiling of the burial chamber (see the photo to the right) depicting a Thracian ruler with his wife and household in vivid colors and breath-taking detail. Again from the web site of UNESCO: "These paintings are Bulgaria's best-preserved artistic masterpieces" of the Antiquity.
The tomb was extensively studied.
1. The Thracian ruler and the noble Thracian woman from the "Funerary Feast" scene
2. Figural Composition of mural paintings from the burial chamber
3. The groom with the saddled horses and the bodyguard
