THE TOMBS
Having landed at this ground in 40 degrees of heat /102 F/, amidst stones and weeds positively teeming with reptiles, I thought it was great luck no serious snakes were to be found in Bulgaria.
I was watching my steps, as I caught sight of something curious and thrillingly enigmatic.
Can it be a tomb?
This is what historians say. Their assumption is that these tombs were cut some 6-8 thousand years ago. The vault is accessible through several steps, which are seen on the near side of the picture. They lead to an opening, which lets into the burial chamber. The chamber itself is a pyramid proper: measuring two by two steps across and about two metres high.
Ten metres away from this tomb there is another one, next to it still other, then one more and so they stretch along for kilometres around.
Archeologists have uncovered some twenty of them. The rest have lain low under the scorched grass for thousands of years.
...............................
THE ANTECHAMBER
Let us take a look at it. The entrance is viewed from above. Visible are the steps. In this case, they are three. The lowest one is the steepest.
............
THE CHAMBER'S OPENING
The underground burial chamber has two openings - one on top (at ground level), the other one gives onto the antechamber. Here shown is the entrance opening.
It proves impossible for me to pass through, standing, or stooping. I manage to squeeze in sideways.
The narrowest place measures a little over a span.
Now let us have a look at the other opening.
....................
THE TOP APERTURE
It is at ground level. This opening is a feet and a half wide and six feet long. I mean my feet. My shoe number is 43.
I affirm that a 58-year old man can get through this opening only sidewise and with a good measure of difficulty.
................
INSIDE THE TOMB
This is the way the burial chamber looks like from the inside. It is empty. All of the uncovered tombs are empty. Snail's shells are scattered about. Spider's webs stick to my face. With all my senses I come to feel the millenia amassed in this chamber. The air is thick and flexible. I feel myself like an iron pellet struggling with the reluctance of a magnetic field. I squat down. For centuries on end the remains of some strangers' lives have been emanating their energy. Gradually, the chamber lets me in. The feeling of resistance is gone. I become part of something alien and immortal.
Unfortunately, the picture I have taken fails to show clearly enough the sloping walls of the Pyramid. I would like to remind that the burial chamber has the form of an equilateral truncated pyramid, truncated by a Sun-lit aperture, an opening to Heaven and the Universe.
.................
HEAVEN SEEN FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE VAULT
This is a view of the aperture in the ceiling of the burial chamber taken from beneath. Discernible are the cobwebs and the straws stuck in.
..........
ANOTHER TOMB
As I mentioned, next to the tomb described, there is another one. Further away lies still other and so they follow one after the other for kilometres around. The uncovered tombs are thousands, I guess.
...........................
THE THRONE
Close to the sea, amidst this strange graveyard, there is a Throne cut in.
Right, this is the Throne of those unknown priests, of that unknown religion, and of that unknown people. The Throne is made up of three steps. They face straight east, overlooking the sea.
People with extrasensory perceptions claim this is the precise place where unusual cosmic energy comes down.
In any case, sitting in the Throne is visibly refreshing.
Behind the Throne is the sacrificial altar. Please note the groove marked by the blue lines.
.....................
THE THRONE VIEWED FROM THE OTHER SIDE
The sun is low and my photographic endeavours end in looking down from above at the place where the ancient sages are believed to have sat. Which one of the steps did they prefer? Maybe the upper one. It is the most comfortable for sitting. It is good for indulging in reflection and meditation. It is good for offering up a prayer to the Sun...
