Hello my loves,

To be relieved of the bondage of self is to realize that the self that claims responsibility for things is a phantom, it does not exist except in our unconscious imaginations. When this is first grasped it is tempting to throw out the entire idea of being a self and begin to identify exclusively as Source but with time and maturity this proves to be unnecessary.

When we look into the question of self ever more deeply we come to realize that what keeps us in bondage is not the self, per se, but the false sense of authorship that has hijacked the self and subverted it. It is a subtle but crucial distinction we make here but looking into it can save you a lot of awkwardness and grief. I can’t tell you how many people over the years have come to me and proudly proclaimed that they are nobody!

Nisargadatta Maharaj said it beautifully. “When you understand the meaning of "Self" there will be no room for selfishness. Understand this thoroughly, abide in it, then in due course you will realize it. When the time is ripe, then it will happen."

The meaning of freedom can never be grasped by the divided mind, because so long as there is a feeling of separateness from experience, from the world, freedom can only mean the extent to which you can push the world around, and fate the extent to which the world pushes you around. To the whole mind, there is no contrasting opposition of “me” and the world. There is just one force or process – the totality – acting, and it does everything that happens.
