JUSTINE TAKES THE CROWN!
In a remarkable display of heady all-court tennis and steely nerves, Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne knocked out countrywoman Kim Clijsters 6-0 6-4 and won her first Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros on Saturday.

Overcome with emotion, a tearful Henin-Hardenne then climbed into the Friends box and exchanged long hugs with her husband, Pierre-Yves, and her coach, Carlos Rodriguez. Henin-Hardenne dedicated the victory to her mother, Francoise, who passed away when Justine was 12.

"It was a dream when I was young and it comes to reality now," said Henin-Hardenne. "I dedicated this to my mother because when I came here with her 11 years ago I said, 'One day I'll be on that court and maybe I'll win.' And today I did."

Showing the composure and wondrous all court game that she displayed in downing Serena Williams, Henin-Hardenne dictated the entire match, serving with precision and authority, ripping her groundstrokes deep and into the corners, and tossing in a bundle of well-thought out drop shots and thunderous service returns.

The 21-year-old Henin-Hardenne played a nearly perfect set, while Clijsters was unable to find her rhythm.

Justine was defending really well," Clijsters said. "She made me start the points all over again. In a few of those points, maybe I tried to go for the lines a little too much."

Henin-Hardenne then won the contest when a Clijsters forehand hit the top of the net cord and dropped back.

Last year, Henin-Hardenne was nowhere near the player she is today. She was still being out-muscled by stronger, elite players and was looking to firm up her family life. Henin-Hardenne has been at odds with her father, Jose for years and her coach, Carlos Rodriguez, has been a pseudo-father since she was 14. So in November, she married her one-time hitting partner, Pierre Yves-Hardenne.

"Mentally she look a lot happier on and off the court," said her friend, Clijsters. "That made the difference."

Henin-Hardenne added, "I got married and I'm feeling very secure, and that's so important for my tennis. When I go on court, I'm not afraid to lose."

The newlywed then decided to see if she could find a new level in her game and in December, visited the legendary trainer, Pat Etcheberry in Orlando, Florida, who had once grinded Jim Courier and Pete Sampras into shape. It was painful process, but the '01 Wimbledon finalist had major goals in sight.

"I remember the work in December when I was almost crying with Pat and he said to me, 'Remember these moments when you hold the trophy.' He was right and I want to thank him."

Henin-Hardenne began to discover herself back in January in the fourth round of the Australian Open on a searing hot day, when she was hellishly cramping against Lindsay Davenport and pulled out a 7-5 5-7 9-7 victory. She lost to Venus Williams in the semi finals, but kept pressing on.

"The match against Lindsay was big for me," she said. "I beat her for the first time and mentally, those kind of matches help you feel stronger."

In April, she out-ran Serena Williams on green clay in the Charleston final, handing the No1 her first loss f the year. Then in Berlin on clay, she achieved a huge psychological victory in a win over Clijsters, who had plastered her the last three times they played. Then it was on to Roland Garros, where last year, she had been flu-ridden and was upset in the first round.

Here in Paris, she overcame the tricky Patty Schnyder in three sets in the fourth round, out-swung all-courter Chanda Rubin in the quarters and then matched the seemingly invincible Serena Williams glare for glare in a three-set victory in the semis.

She woke up Saturday morning and her husband told her not to fret, that they would be the same happy couple when they saw each other in the afternoon.

"He said, 'win or lose, it doesn't matter, we're very proud of you,'" she said. "That's very important to me that I know the people around me love me."

After her practice session, Henin-Hardenne visited the seats where her mother brought her to when she was little girl for the 1992 final, when her heroine, Steffi Graf, lost to Monica Seles.

Once she got on court, she was filled with spirit and ready to match Clijsters blow by blow. In just over an hour, it was a knockout for the 5-foot-5 little Belgian with a huge heart.

"[My mom] gave me all the energy I needed to win this match," Henin-Hardenne said. "When I woke up this morning, I said, 'You'll have to win, You have to do it for your mom.' It was a lot of emotion at the end of the match."
