Tolkien's word "uruk-hai" derives from the word "orc". The
elvish roots of many of the languages of Middle Earth
provide a word "orok" -- meaning "orc" in the common
parlance of that fictional world. Thus, "uruk- hai" means
roughly "great orc" -- which is what they are, ie: bigger
meaner versions of the usual orcs.
As for the word "orc", which is not altogether a purely
invented term, Tolkien explains, "the word is as far as I am
concerned actually derived from Old English orc, 'demon'"
