NATO was created to protect Western Europe from the Communist hordes — namely the Bulgarians

NATO was created to protect Western Europe from Stalin s forces from U.S.S.R. not poor enslaved countries of Eastern Europe. Military forces of those countries were irrelevant and mostly laughable but what mattered is that hundreds of thousands of Russian troops and their heavy weaponry as well as nukes were stationed in Warsaw Pact countries. Todor Zhivkov and his Russian satellite regime were not democratically elected but forcefully installed regime by Stalin. Before WWII there were no strong communist movements in Romania and Bulgaria and that is the reason why Ceausescu and Zhivkov were perceived as the worst possible Moscow lackeys. Peoples support for communism and Stalin in those two countries was equal or less than zero. After four decades of slavery these countries are running away from Moscow and Russian imperialism so it is in world's interest to help them achieve that goal. Bashing those two brave countries who support America in getting rid of Saddam and their wish to join NATO should be rewarded not sanctioned as crazy Chirac wants to. Actually he is the one who wants total obedience of Bulgaria and Romania and he is the one who wants to blackmail them over their entrance into EU.

The U.S. is now in the process of wooing the minnows — as some in the Pentagon disparagingly call the small countries that could deliver the votes for a Security Council resolution on going to war with Iraq.

Similar to Russia and China who are doing the same thing but in their case to prevent war with Iraq. Every vote counts.

The Bulgarians used to be the lowest of the low here.

Point is that they used to be. The lowest of the low today are Iraq, Serbia, Belarus, North Korea.

As one Soviet expert put it, Bulgaria used to be Russia's lapdog. Now it's America's lapdog.

Hardly it is true because current government in Bulgaria is democratically elected government not forcefully installed by Washington. It is understandable why Russians are mad, losing Bulgaria as their colony. Majority of Bulgarians know that in their interest is to turn to the West and America because they all very well know what life used to be in Bulgaria during Russian colonialism. It is strange that the same story doesn't go for Czech Republic or Poland who are already members of NATO and fully support America's initiative in the Middle East.

The Bulgarians were such sycophants to Russia that in the 60's they proposed becoming the 16th republic of the Soviet Union.

Or was it Todor Zhivkov and his lackeys without asking people of their opinion? It is strange that now we blame Bulgarian people for the servitude of a Russian lackey Zhivkov. Similar thing we have today is with Belarus and local Stalinist dictator Lukashenko who wants to join Russia without people's support. Are we going to blame Belarusians for that or authoritarian dictator who rules by indiscriminate use of force?

Mr. Bush will not be the only one having trouble with the Bulgarian prime minister's name. We all will.

The trade is in your hollow head. Both France and soon to be Bulgaria are part of NATO so there is no trade of any kind. Like Turkey asked for big aid to allow U.S. to deploy troops in Turkey it is French who want to drive even tougher bargain. I can bet that Chirac will vote for use of force against Iraq but in the last moment or do you expect from France to become Russian republic in the near future.
