Mugwort is just another name for the wild sages..the artemisia spp. It is the western mugwort ( A. ludoviciana) that we use to smudge with. It is used in all our ceremonies for this purpose and others. It is/was also used medicinally within the tribe. It was also used for things such as toilet paper (providing there was no mullein growing nearby, which is considerably softer! ) ah... for women's sanitary purposes, deoderizing shoe liners....
The prairie sagewort ( A. frigida) is what we aslo call 'women's sage..for medicine, but it is great to infuse an oil with if you have a cold...smells somewhat like Vicks. And the warriors use to do just this, with buffalo fat and would rub the nostrils of their horses..that way when on a raid or war party, if they were riding a stud..he couldn't smell a mare in heat....
