________________________________________________ More than 500 Bulgarians fought with the Waffen-SS. They mainly came from recovered wounded in German military hospitals and from soldiers attending German arms schools at the time of the Bulgarian switch to the Allies. These men formed the cadre of the Waffen-Grenadier Regiment (Bulgarisches #1) under the leadership of Waffen-Oberfuehrer Ivan Rogosaroff ( a former Colonel in the Bulgarian Army). Other Bulgarians fought as commandos with the SS-Jagdverbaende in Hungary and Austria during 1945. This information is taken from an appendix to Richard Landwehr's book "Romanian Volunteers of the Waffen-SS 1944-45."

Reference: "Foreign Legions of the Third Reich Volume 4" copyright 1987, by David Littlejohn, ISBN 0-912138-36-X, pages 57 & 58 Himmler had been urging the Bulgarians to create an SS Legion since December 1942. After the Red Army occupied Bulgaria, pro-German/anti-communist Bulgarians had fled to Germany. Waffen-Grenadier Division der SS (Bulgarische) Nr. 1 was proposed. At Dollersheim , Austria, they were only able to muster 25 officers, 56 non-comissioned officers and approximately 500 of other ranks. Also included were "Brannik Youth" students from German universities. In April 1945 an anti-tank regiment SS Panzer-Zestorer-Regiment (bulgarisches) had been formed. Its war record is unknown at this time. This book identifies the commander of this regiment as Colonel Rogosarof, former Minister of Labor (Bulgaria) and leader of the Bulgarian Labor Service. The book also states, there was a Bulgarian Air Force Regiment which continued to fight with Germany. The unit was equipped with Ju-87D and fought against Yugoslav partisians. The unit is unidentified and no other information is available _____________________________________________
