".....France has made a big leap in fusion power research by sustaining a plasma reaction for more than 22 minutes, setting a new record. This milestone was achieved at the „Commissariat а l'а еnergie atomique et aux еnergies alternatives (CEA)" WEST Tokamak reactor on February 12, 2025. Fusion power, which involves fusing hydrogen isotopes to release huge amounts of energy, has been a major scientific goal for decades due to its promise of virtually limitless, clean energy. The challenge lies not in starting fusion, but in maintaining a stable, self-sustaining reaction that produces more energy than it consumes, requiring extremely high temperatures—several times hotter than the sun’s core—and strong pressure.
The WEST Tokamak’s achievement of holding plasma for 1,337 seconds (over 22 minutes) surpasses recent records like China’s 1,066 seconds earlier in 2025. Importantly, the reactor kept the reaction stable without damage or contamination to its components. While WEST itself won’t be a commercial reactor, the data collected will help improve larger projects such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France. Researchers plan to push for even longer reaction times and higher temperatures. This breakthrough brings fusion power closer to becoming a practical, sustainable energy source for the future....."
