Beating the Holders
Real Madrid do not only hold the record of most wins; they are also the
club who most often eliminated the defending champions: on no fewer than
7 occasions they managed to do this, in 4 of which they went on to win
themselves. Together with CSKA (Sofia) they hold the distinction of
performing this feat in consecutive seasons. CSKAmanaged to do it
3 times in total, an achievement shared with Juventus.
Three other famous clubs did it twice: Barcelona ,Dynamo Kiev and Milan.
All clubs to eliminate the defending champions more than once
7 Real Madrid (1963/64, 1965/66, 1986/87, 1987/88, 1997/98, 1999/00, 2001/02)
3 CSKA Sofia (1973/74, 1980/81, 1981/82)
3 Juventus (1982/83, 1984/85, 1995/96)
2 Barcelona (1960/61, 1985/86)
2 Milan (1962/63, 1968/69)
2 Dynamo Kiev (1967/68, ,1998/99)
