Mozia was an ancient Phoenician colony located on an island off the west coast of Sicily near Mazara. An ancient causeway linked it to the mainland. No you must take a short boat ride to reach the isle. Mozia was destroyed in the 6th century B.C. by the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysus.
The locality of Mozia
In the Stagnone (A coast zone, characterized by shallow sounding-depths for a wide extension) of Marsala is a small isle, so small that it would be unthinkable its participation in the history of the great island of Sicily, but it was the most important Phoenician colony of the island.
It was founded by Phoenicians at the end of the VIII century B.C. and soon Mozia became a flourishing colony. It was called Mozia (spinning-mill) because of installations of wool working which are placed on the isle.

It was destroyed in 397 B.C. by Dionysus the Old, despot of Siracusa; the inhabitants moved from the town to Lilybeo, the today's Marsala. During the early Middle Ages some basilian monk lived there and called it St. Giuliano's isle.
In the last century it was buyed by the magnate Giuseppe Whitaker and became, thanks to him,an archaeological place and so a valuable collection of remains has been recovered.
