"To appreciate the significance of this type of “eraser” or “delayed-choice” experiment, consider the following thought experiment.
A number of so-called “double” quasars are known. They appear as apparently identical quasars lying close to one another in the sky.
They are, in fact, two images of the same distant quasar, their light has been focused toward the earth along two separate paths by a gravitational lensing effect produced by an intervening galaxy or cluster of galaxies. Since there exists two possible trajectories (paths) by which the photons from the quasar can
make its way from the quasar to the earth, there is the possibility of seeing interference.
Only one more step is needed. We insert a beam recombination device at the meeting point of the two trajectories.
Without the device, an observer would see two images of the quasar; with it, one observes interference. ??? -
Quasars, however, are billions of light years away, and we can delay our choice of whether or not to insert the device until the last moment.
The conceptual consequences of such a delayed choice are now dramatic.
With the device in place, the photon has been traveling for billions of years via both paths (since we see interference). Changing our minds and leaving it out, the photon has been traveling along one path or the other (there is no interference).
But what possible difference can our insertion make in the billion year past history of the light ?
Our action in this present moment seems to have consequences that stretch back into the cosmic past in some way."
