Rochester’s largest employer is expected to unveil on Wednesday the DCS Pro 14n, a single-lens reflex camera that captures images with 13.8 million picture elements, or ‘’pixels.’’

Pixels are the tiny colored dots that make up a digital image. By comparison, a frame of high-quality 35mm film contains an estimated 12 million to 18 million pixels.

The camera, which will be announced at the massive PhotoKina trade show in Cologne, Germany, is believed to be the highest resolution SLR ever announced. It is significant because technological advances in professional cameras eventually filter down to the mass market.

Kodak believes the camera will be used mainly by portrait, wedding, event and commercial photographers, but may also attract advanced amateurs. The estimated retail price is less than $4,000. Just four years ago, Kodak was selling professional digital cameras with less resolution for $30,000.

The 14n is also Kodak’s first camera to use an image sensor produced by complementary metal-oxide semiconductor manufacturing, a more efficient and lower-cost process. Such chips have space to accommodate microprocessors that govern other camera functions, such as clock settings.

’’We think this camera will be a great fit for any photographer,’’ said Karen Smith-Pilkington, president of Kodak’s professional photography business.

The pixel race is not over. Sinar AG, a Germany company, will announce at PhotoKina that it has developed an image sensor with Kodak that captures images at 20 million pixels.
