Purpose
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a meta-markup
language that provides a format for describing structured
data. This facilitates more precise declarations of content
and more meaningful search results across multiple
platforms.
In addition, XML will enable a new generation of
Web-based data viewing and manipulation applications.

the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), ensuring that structured data will be uniform

Предлагам преди да продължим дискусията да прочетеш спецификацията на XML-а или просто да разгледаш сорса на някой XML parser, защото по това което си написал си мисля че досега не си писал или разглеждал сорса на програма, която да ползва файлове с данни в XML формат. Що се отнася до спецификацията на Document Object Model Level 1, то това по никакъв начин не доказва абсурдното ти твърдение, че XML-а е разширение на HTML-а, защото DOM Level 1 _по_дефиниция_ е набор от класове за работа с XML и _HTML_. Ако прочетеш спецификацията на XML-а ще видиш че тя дефинира единствено синтаксиса на данните, но по никакъв начим не определя смисъла на XML таговете във файла.
Предполагам че просто бъркаш XML с XHTML, който действително е версия на HTML, ползваща XML синтаксис.
