Pomegranate Benefits

Pomegranate Benefits

The best things in life don’t come easy and pomegranate is a perfect metaphor for that! There’s nothing like cracking open a ripe pomegranate, and scooping out all of its jeweled seeds. Sure, it gets messy, but the moment you take a bite and taste its crunchy juiciness was when the work paid off. Given that it’s fall, I thought you’d like to know about this seasonal fruit and its many benefits! Ready to find out? Then let’s get started! (And guess what? I’ll leave a few recipes, too!)

A Treasure Trove of Antioxidants

Pomegranates are one of the richest sources of antioxidants. That’s no exaggeration since measurements show it contains up to three times more antioxidants when compared to red wine and green tea (beating out my beloved matcha). [1] As an antioxidant, pomegranate has been studied for a wide variety of uses.

These include disease protection, lowering inflammation and free radicals, and improving the gut (microbiome). Anything that’s linked to inflammation like Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and arthritis has been shown to improve (to varying degrees) with pomegranate. This is thanks to ellagic acid, a type of antioxidant found in berries and pomegranate. Ellagic acid interacts with good bacteria to release a beneficial compound called UroA (urolithin). UroA acts like a gatekeeper between the lining of the gut and cells (called cell junctions), keeping things like toxins and pathogens from entering. This prevents infection, inflammation, and damage to the gut. [2] [3] [4]

Pomegranates also contain punicalagins, a class of antioxidants that are broken down into “mini” antioxidants (ellagic acid and urolithins). Punicalagins are very exciting in the fields of cardiology and cancer, with emerging research testing their ability to prevent both heart disease and cancer. [5] [6]

Omega-5 Fats

Did you know there are other fats besides omega 3 and 6? Pomegranates contain omega 5 fats (aka trichosanic or punicic acid), a special type of fat that lowers inflammation, improves cholesterol, lowers triglycerides, and (potentially) boosts weight loss. You read that right! Omega-5 fats are capable of being converted into CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), another type of fat known for its potential fat burning, weight loss benefits. While you can get CLA from supplements and food (such as grass-fed beef), you can cheat your way with pomegranates. Or, more specifically, pomegranate seed oil, which is what’s used in the research. While it’s based on animals, the research shows that omega-5 fats from pomegranate seed oil helped prevent mice from gaining weight after being over over-fed. [7]

Heart Health:

The omega-5 fats and juice from pomegranates both have been shown to support heart health. A study on patients with high triglycerides (fat in the bloodstream) showed they significantly reduced their triglycerides (as well as cholesterol) after just one month of supplementing with pomegranate seed oil. [8] As for pomegranate juice, multiple studies- both animal and human-based- consistently show it prevents “bad” LDL cholesterol from oxidizing. Oxidized cholesterol releases dangerous free radicals that not only damage the body but also increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, inflammation, and disease. But the train doesn’t stop there, guys! Just one ounce of pomegranate per day was shown to reduce arterial plaque by 30%. Plaque in the arteries is no joke. The more it builds up, the higher the risk of it clogged up and narrowing the arteries that ultimately lead to coronary heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]

Infections

Didn’t think pomegranate was tough enough to put on a good fight? Well, think again! Pomegranate also contains compounds that have been shown to combat certain types of bacteria (E. Coli, Salmonella) and yeasts (especially Candida Albicans). It also protects against oral infections and inflammation, including denture stomatitis, gingivitis, and periodontitis. [14] [15] [16]

Exercise Performance

This, my fellow ZGYM warriors, is especially for you! Pomegranates are a surprisingly good food for athletes! First of all, its antioxidants lower the damage caused by exercise. While that’s not always a bad thing, we don’t want to be inflamed for too long. Just enough to enable our body to adapt by growing stronger and fitter. If we don’t focus on our recovery though, then this could backfire in the form of added stress on the body. We won’t burn any fat, build muscle, and continue crushing our ZGYM workouts. Do not neglect recovery!

By the way, pomegranate isn’t only good for post-workout nourishment. It’s equally as effective pre-workout, but not for the reason you may think. Pomegranates help to boost nitric oxide, a type of compound that converts into nitrate (found in foods like beets and spinach). Nitrates act as a vasodilator by opening up blood vessels in the body and allowing more oxygen and blood to enter the muscles. What results is greater muscle activation and less fatigue during a workout. Pretty cool, huh?

[17] [18]

Nutrients

Crack open a pomegranate, and what do you find? A ton of nutrients! We’ve already covered its antioxidants. Now let’s see what else it has in store. Pomegranates contain vitamins C, E, K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, B6, Pantothenic Acid, and Folate, as well as the minerals potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese. [19]

For my low carb and keto eaters, be careful with this wonderful fruit. Even though it has a laundry list of benefits, you still need to watch out for the carbs! A half a cup of pomegranate seeds is about 16g of carbs (or 12.5g of net carbs if you subtract the 3.5g of fiber) and 12g of (natural) fruit sugar. The juice is denser in both carbs and sugar, with a full cup leaving you with 33g of carbs and 31 grams of sugar. A way around this is sticking with only an ounce or two at the most (use a shot glass to measure), which is similar to what was taken in the heart health studies. [10] [20]

Resistant Starch

I’m still riding high on the gut health wave! It’s just so fascinating to discover all the little things that influence it and how it helps us in return. Read the following posts here and here to catch up on the basics of gut health and why it’s so important. After that, come back here as we dive into the topic of Resistant Starch which, by the way, is surprisingly good for those of us eating low carb or keto! Are you ready? Then let’s get to it!

Resistant Starch 101

Quick recap: good bacteria in the gut feed on prebiotics and stick around to keep us healthy. Awesome. Prebiotics are found in colorful foods like blueberries and red cabbage, asparagus, garlic, onions, and anything with fiber. But surprise! There’s another type of fiber that’s often ignored or underused. It’s mainly found in foods that are typically seen as high carb, and only forms when these foods are properly cooked and stored.

Resistance Starch, as it’s called, is a type of starch that “resists” digestion. It helps to improve insulin sensitivity, balance blood sugar, reduce appetite, and of course, feed our beneficial bacteria. And in some instances, it may boost weight loss.

Resistant starch comes in two forms: cooked and uncooked. Cooked resistance starch can be found in potatoes, white rice, beans and lentils, sweet potatoes, plantains (as well as the chips), whole grains (oats, barley), and squash. Non-cooked sources include unripe or green bananas, cashews, pistachios, peanuts, and tiger nuts.

Let’s take a step back and talk about those cooked sources. You can’t just boil a potato and then eat it expecting to get resistant starch. That’s not how it works. In order for it to have resistant starch, you need to cool it for at least a couple of hours in the refrigerator. This creates resistant starch by way of a process known as retrogradation. Do not “re-heat”these foods if you want to take in as much resistant starch as possible!

[1] [2] [3]

Benefits of Resistant Starch

When good bacteria digest (or ferment) prebiotics like resistant starch, they release short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). One of these SCFAs is called butyrate, and it’s essential to gut health. Butyrate is the preferred source of fuel for the cells that line and protect the gut. So, you get the double whammy effect here of resistant starch feeding the good bacteria and indirectly fueling protective gut cells. [4]

Inflammation, Disease, and Minerals

Resistant starch doesn’t only feed; it heals, too. Down in the colon (large intestine), it reduces pH, which lowers inflammation and prevents the onset of diseases like inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD), Crohn’s, and ulcerative colitis. Further research suggests it may help to relieve digestive issues, from constipation and diarrhea to diverticulitis. The low pH isn’t only great for managing inflammation. It also helps to keep bad, opportunistic yeast and bacteria from growing in the gut, since they cannot survive in that kind of environment. Outside of lowering inflammation and giving bad guys the boot, the low pH increases our ability to absorb minerals from food. What a triple threat! [5] [6] [7] [8]

Metabolism

Here’s what else is cool about resistant starch: it’s great for your metabolism. How so? First, there’s its ability to improve insulin sensitivity. Whenever we become resistant to insulin, we develop conditions like metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. So, we want the opposite to occur and be sensitive to it. A few studies demonstrate resistant starch’s ability to improve both insulin sensitivity and blood sugar after eating. It also has the rare ability to cause a “second meal effect” where it reduces blood sugar in the meal after it. So, in other words, if you ate resistant starch for lunch, you’ll also be having lower blood sugar after dinner. Pretty neat, huh? If you want specific numbers, one study showed that it caused a 33-50%improvement in sensitivity after four weeks of supplementation. [9] [10]

Weight Loss

Resistant starch is also good for weight loss. First is that it increases satiety (aka, fullness). Human studies have proven just that, with healthy subjects experiencing better insulin response and staying nice and full after meals. And because they’re satiated, they’re less likely to overeat and consume more calories. Something worth noting is that resistant starch has fewer calories than starch. While starch contains 4 calories per gram, resistant starch has only two. I’m not one to count calories, but it’s useful information to have at hand when it comes to portion control. You can slightly get away with more resistant starch foods!
In animals, resistant starch was shown to increase weight loss, and while this sounds great, we have yet to see this in humans. Maybe one day! [11] [12]

Cancer

Now, before I cover this next benefit, I have to remind you that I am not a doctor or qualified expert. I’m just sharing information. None of this is meant to replace treatment or medical advice. Here is some interesting research you might want to know about resistant starch and its ability to prevent colorectal cancer. Very early studies have shown that it increases pre-cancer-cell death, which is probably the best form of prevention you can get. It’s also been shown to protect our DNA from oxidative damage caused by unstable free radicals, which are also highly inflammatory. And as we covered before, resistant starch is very anti-inflammatory, so it combats damage at both a cellular and genetic level. [13]

Resistant Starch- The Friendly Carb?

Oh! And don’t worry if you’re low carb or keto. Remember, resistant starch resists digestion, which means that it doesn’t get broken down like regular starches (or high carbs) do. You don’t want to go overboard with them and eat a ton (at least when eating low carb or keto). But you can get away with having, say, a small portion of cooled white rice or potatoes now and then since they don’t spike blood sugar. (They do the opposite.) Of course, everyone responds differently to foods. Measure your blood sugar or ketones after eating resistant starch foods and see how it works for you! [14] [15]

By the way, if you wanted to enhance the effects of resistant starch, be sure to combine them with fermented foods. This could be sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, miso, etc. The bacteria in the fermented food will go nuts on the prebiotic resistant starch and become what is called a symbiotic down in the gut. Symbiotics are the ultimate power couple since they both feed the current bacteria down in the gut while also temporarily improving digestion. [16] [17]

Over to You
I hope you learned a thing or two with this post, guys! It was really fun to research. If there’s anything more you’d like to know about gut health, ask away in the comments, and I’ll be sure to write something up!

How to Make Your Own CoQ10

How to Make Your Own CoQ10

Written By Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on November 13, 2018

Fecal Fluorescence on Meat
Chlorophyll is the green pigment that makes green leaves green. If you search for chlorophyll in the medical literature, a lot of what you find is about fecal fluorescence, a way to detect the contamination of carcasses in the slaughterhouse with feces to reduce the risk of food poisoning from pathogens harbored within animal feces. Fecal matter gets on meat either “with knife entry through the hide into the carcass, and also splash back and aerosol [airborne] deposition of fecal matter during hide removal”—that is, when they’re peeling off the skin. If, however, the animals have been eating grass, you can pick up the poo with a black light. As you can see in my video How to Regenerate Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) Naturally, a solution of chlorophyll is green, but, under a UV light, it lights up as red. So, if you have a black light in a chicken slaughter plant, you can get a drop on the droppings. The problem is most chickens aren’t outside anymore. They’re no longer pecking at grass so there’s less fecal fluorescence. We could let them run around outside or we could save money by just adding a chlorophyll supplement to their feed so we can better “identify areas of gut-spill contamination” on the meat.

Chlorophyll: An Anti-Inflammatory
The reason I was looking up chlorophyll was to follow-up on the data I presented in my Eating Green to Prevent Cancer video, which suggests that chlorophyll may be able to block carcinogens. I found a few in vitro studies on the potential anti-inflammatory effects of chlorophyll. After all, green leaves have long been used to treat inflammation, so anti-inflammatory properties of chlorophyll and their break-down products after digestion were put to the test. And, indeed, they may represent “valuable and abundantly available anti-inflammatory agents.” Maybe that’s one reason why cruciferous vegetables, like kale and collard greens, are associated with decreased markers of inflammation.

In a petri dish, for example, if you lay down a layer of arterial lining cells, more inflammatory immune cells stick to them after you stimulate them with a toxic substance. We can bring down that inflammation with the anti-inflammatory drug aspirin or, even more so, by just dripping on some chlorophyll. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons kale consumers appear to live longer lives.

Producing Our Own Chlorophyll
As interesting as I found that study to be, this next study blew my mind. The most abundant energy source on this planet is sunlight. However, only plants are able to use it directly—or so we thought. After eating plants, animals have chlorophyll in them, too, so might we also be able to derive energy directly from sunlight? Well, first of all, light can’t get through our skin, right? Wrong. This was demonstrated by century-old science—and every kid who’s ever shined a flashlight through her or his fingers, showing that the red wavelengths do get through. In fact, if you step outside on a sunny day, there’s enough light penetrating your skull and going through to your brain that you could read a book in there. Okay, so our internal organs are bathed in sunlight, and when we eat green leafy vegetables, the absorbed chlorophyll in our body does actually appear to produce cellular energy. But, unless we eat so many greens we turn green ourselves, the energy produced is probably negligible.

However, light-activated chlorophyll inside our body may help regenerate Coenzyme Q10. CoQ10 is an antioxidant our body basically makes from scratch using the same enzyme we use to make cholesterol—that is, the same enzyme that’s blocked by cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. So, if CoQ10 production gets caught in the crossfire, then maybe that explains why statins increase our risk of diabetes—namely, by accidently also reducing CoQ10 levels in a friendly-fire type of event. Maybe that’s why statins can lead to muscle breakdown. Given that, should statin users take CoQ10 supplements? No, they should sufficiently improve their diets to stop taking drugs that muck with their biochemistry! By doing so—by eating more plant-based chlorophyll-rich diets—you may best maintain your levels of active CoQ10, also known as ubiquinol. “However, when ubiquinol is used as an antioxidant, it is oxidized to ubiquinone. To act as an effective antioxidant, the body must regenerate ubiquinol from ubiquinone,” perhaps by using dietary chlorophyll metabolites and light.

Researchers exposed some ubiquinone and chlorophyll metabolites to the kind of light that makes it into our bloodstream. Poof! CoQ10 was reborn. But, without the chlorophyll or the light, nothing happened. By going outside we get light and, if we’re eating our veggies, chlorophyll, so maybe that’s how we maintain such high levels of CoQ10 in our bloodstream. Perhaps this explains why dark green leafy vegetables are so good for us. We know sun exposure can be good for us and that eating greens can be good for us. “These benefits are commonly attributed to an increase in vitamin D from sunlight exposure and consumption of antioxidants from green vegetables”—but is it possible that these explanations might be incomplete?

This blog post has it all: a mind-blowing mechanism, practical applicability, and poop. What more could you want?

Peter Diamandis on how to live a longer life

Peter Diamandis on how to live a longer life (Youtube)

On this episode of Lifespan News, Ryan O’Shea outlines Peter Diamandis’ recommendations on how to live a longer life.

It is now the new year, and this is a time that people all over the world reflect on the past and aspire to make positive changes going forward. For many of us, this involves a desire to better our health and set the stage for a longer lifespan. This is a goal that we share with well known entrepreneur and author Peter Diamandis. He’s released a list of 10 Longevity Resolutions for the new year that you may be able to apply to your own life. We explore the list on this episode of Lifespan News!\

Peter Diamandis is a Harvard and MIT-educated physician and entrepreneur, perhaps best known for joining forces with Steven Kotler to write the The New York Times bestsellers Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think and BOLD: How to Go Big, Create Wealth, and Impact the World. He’s also behind companies and organizations such as XPRIZE, Singularity University, and Human Longevity, Inc.

Diamandis is a trained medical doctor, and he ends his list by saying that he hopes you’ll challenge yourself to adopt some (or all!) of these resolutions. But it’s possible that some of these things may not be right for everyone, and just to be safe, it is often recommended that you discuss these kinds of diet and lifestyle changes with your doctor.

So now let’s get into the list.

Diamandis begins by saying:

Nothing is more important than your Mindset in the new year…. During this decade of extra-ordinary biotech breakthroughs, your goal is to live healthy enough, to intercept those age-reversal technologies heading our way. There are important things you can do right now.

- Prioritize Sleep: Don’t underestimate the importance and positive impact of sleep. Make a goal of 8 hours of sleep each night. Get to sleep early, wake up early and get a jump on the day!
- Exercise & Build Muscle: Muscle mass is one of the most important predictors of longevity and speedy recoveries from injuries. Even a small amount of weekly resistance or weight training can stimulate growth hormones and increase muscle mass.
- 10,000 Steps Each Day: You’re never too busy to get moving. Resolve to take at least 1 hour of Zoom or phone calls while walking. It’s easy and fun.
- Minimize Sugar: It’s simple… Sugar = poison. It causes inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and fuels cancer. Go on a 10-day sugar fast and cut it out of your diet completely for several days. It’s possible, especially if you do it alongside friends.
- Upgrade Your Community: The people you spend time with shape who you are, what you think and what you do. Hang out with young or young-minded individuals who care about their health! Spend time with friends who are optimistic and those who actively pursue longevity.
- Do an Annual “Full-body Health Upload”: Most of us have *no idea* what is really going on in our body. Every year, I visit either Fountain Life or Human Longevity’s Health Nucleus to do a full body MRI, an AI-driven CT, Genome, microbiome, and much more. A key to longevity is proper screening and preventative medicine. Just a note here – Peter Diamandis did launch Human Longevity, alongside Craig Venter, in 2013. So in this one, he possibly has some other incentive for recommending that service. That doesn’t mean, however, that this isn’t good advice.
- Drink 2-3 liters of Water Every Day: If there’s a magic fuel source for the human body, it’s water.
- Eat a Whole-plant-based Diet: I avoid red meat (which can result in cancer, heart disease, and diabetes), and focus on a Mediterranean plant-based diet and fish rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
- Intermittent Fasting for 12+ Hours: I do my best to fast between 7pm and 12 noon the next day, providing me a 17-hour fast. It gives me extraordinary energy during the day and helps me remain fit. (Remember: drink lots of water!)
- Read Longevity Enabling Content: Be the CEO of your own health and stay up to date on the latest advancements in medicine. Consider reading my AI-enabled longevity newsletter ([

Absolutely, read longevity-enabling content, but you can also watch it by subscribing to Lifespan News. We have a lot more longevity-focused content in the works, so this year you might resolve to make watching Lifespan News a part of your longevity goals.

So what do you think, did Diamandis assemble a good list? Are there any you disagree with, or anything you would add? Let us know in the comments below, and we can crowdsource our own list of longevity resolutions!

I’m Ryan O’Shea, and we’ll see you next time on Lifespan News!

Reserveage Nutrition Resveratrol 500mg ($ 34.38, Amazon).

Carolyn Williams.

Williams.

Cell Metabolism.

Cleveland Clinic Studies Reveal Role of Red Meat in Gut Bacteria, Heart Disease Development

Studies compare impacts of dietary red meat versus other protein sources

In concurrent studies, Cleveland Clinic researchers have uncovered new mechanisms that demonstrate why and how regularly eating red meat can increase the risk of heart disease, and the role gut bacteria play in that process.

The research, led by Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., builds upon previous work showing TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) – a gut bacteria byproduct formed during digestion – can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. TMAO is produced when gut bacteria digest choline, lecithin and carnitine, nutrients that are abundant in animal products such as red meat and liver and other animal products.

In a new dietary intervention study published today in the European Heart Journal, the researchers found that a diet rich in red meat as the primary protein source significantly increases circulating TMAO levels, compared to diets with white meat or non-meat as protein sources. The study showed chronic red meat consumption enhanced the production of TMAO by gut microbes and reduced the kidneys’ efficiency of expelling it. Both enhanced production and reduced elimination caused by a red meat diet contribute to elevation in TMAO levels, which has been linked to the development of atherosclerosis and heart disease complications.

Hazen, Stanley L., M.D., Ph.D., chair of Cellular and Molecular Medicine

High levels of TMAO in the blood have been shown to be a powerful tool for predicting future heart attack, stroke and death risks, according to previous research initially spearheaded by Dr. Hazen and his team, and subsequently replicated around the world. TMAO testing is now in clinical use as a result. Dr. Hazen chairs the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine in Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and is co-section head of Preventive Cardiology & Cardiac Rehabilitation in the Miller Heart &Vascular Institute.

The study included 113 participants who sequentially (in random order) were provided complete meal plans prepared using either red meat, white meat or non-meat (mostly vegetarian) protein sources as 25 percent of their daily calories. All participants had a wash-out diet in between meal plans.

After one month of the red meat diet, the vast majority of study participants experienced an elevation in TMAO levels in blood and urine. On average, TMAO levels in the blood increased approximately 3-fold during the red meat diet, compared to the white meat or non-meat diets, with some patients showing over a 10-fold rise. Similar increases were observed in the urine. However, after patients stopped the red meat diet, TMAO levels in the blood and urine subsided over the following month.

The study also revealed the unanticipated finding that a participant’s chronic dietary choices impacted kidney function by changing the effectiveness of the kidneys to expel compounds. For example, while a red meat diet decreased TMAO excretion, the red meat diet increased the excretion efficiency of carnitine and other carnitine-derived metabolites.

“This is the first study of our knowledge to show that the kidneys can change how effectively they expel different compounds depending on the diet that one eats – other than salts and water,” said Dr. Hazen, who also directs Cleveland Clinic Center for Microbiome and Human Health. “We know lifestyle factors are critical for cardiovascular health, and these findings build upon our previous research on TMAO’s link with heart disease. They provide further evidence for how dietary interventions may be an effective treatment strategy to reduce TMAO levels and lower subsequent risk of heart disease.”

In another study, published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Dr. Hazen and his research team revealed a potential new target for preventing cardiovascular disease by drilling deeper into a gut microbial pathway that converts carnitine into TMAO.

The researchers found that carnitine – a nutrient abundant in red meat and some energy drinks and supplements – is converted to TMAO in the gut through a two-step process facilitated by distinct gut bacteria. The team discovered that the first step is similar in both omnivores (meat eaters) and vegans/vegetarians. But in the second part, the formation of TMAO is significantly enhanced in omnivores. Researchers then went on to show that a daily carnitine supplement can induce TMAO production, even for vegans and vegetarians who continue eating their normal diets. Earlier this year, Dr. Hazen and his team published a study showing how researchers had designed a potential new class of drugs for prevention of heart disease and clotting risk by interrupting the microbial pathway by which choline is converted into TMAO.

Dr. Hazen’s team compared the impact of daily oral carnitine supplements on omnivores versus vegetarians/vegans. At baseline, vegan/vegetarians showed limited ability to produce TMAO from carnitine while omnivores rapidly produced TMAO. After one month of supplementation, both groups showed an increased capacity to produce TMAO.

“It is remarkable that vegans and vegetarians can barely make TMAO from dietary carnitine. The striking new finding about the pathway induced by ingesting carnitine – even if only provided as a supplement in a capsule form – provides important insights about new interventions to inhibit TMAO, which may help reduce risks for cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Hazen, who holds the Jan Bleeksma Chair in Vascular Cell Biology and Atherosclerosis.

“By uncovering this new pathway, we can potentially develop new treatments to interrupt this process before both the development and progression of cardiovascular disease.”

Investigators from Procter & Gamble participated in the study reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The dietary intervention studies in the European Heart Journal were performed in collaboration with a research team led by Dr. Ron Krauss, director of atherosclerosis research at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, and adjunct professor of nutritional sciences at UC Berkeley.

Dr. Hazen is named as co-inventor on pending and issued patents held by Cleveland Clinic relating to cardiovascular diagnostics and therapeutics, and has the right to receive royalty payment for inventions or discoveries related to cardiovascular diagnostics or therapeutics. Dr. Hazen also reports having been paid as a consultant for P&G, and receiving research funds from P&G.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Every year, about 610,000 people die of heart disease in this country, accounting for one in every four deaths.

Building Muscle Over Age 40 - Complete How-to Guide - Thomas DeLauer

Up until now you've been told that you have to go to the doctor and get some special treatment in order to actually build muscle over the age of 40. I'm here to tell you that if you understand your body and you understand timing and you understand cellular rejuvenation properly, you don't have to do that. You can build muscle just by knowing timing and knowing the specific kinds of workouts, even if you're over 40, okay? Even if you're over 50, 60, 70. So we're going to break it all down for you. I'm going to teach you what's happening inside, unfortunately, the aging body, right? I'm also going to teach you just different little tips and tricks that you can apply to get the most out of your workouts, the most out of your nutrition, and the most out of your timing. So you're going to have a solid answer to it.

This video is also good for people who are interested in how to build muscle over age 50 as well. The principles can be applied at any age, to be honest.

So the Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine published a study that found that as you get older, you do need to increase your protein to maintain muscle mass. In fact, they said, based on their standards, it goes from 0.8 grams per kilogram up to 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight. Now that's based on that scale. So if we take that into consideration, we're basically looking at like a 30% increase in protein.

So let's jump to autophagy for just a second, okay? So autophagy, again, is going to be the opposite of what you think. We normally think of autophagy as associated with fasting and just shrinking things down. But again, it's all about efficiency. You see, the journal Cell Metabolism published a study that found that autophagy is what allowed muscle to be spared.

So now we have to break this down with when should you train? Should you train in the morning? Should you train in the evening? Should you train fasted? What should it be? Well, there's a study that was published in the journal PLoS One, okay, and this study took a look at people that worked out in the morning and worked out in the evening.

They found that people that worked out in the morning had significantly higher levels of norepinephrine. They also had higher levels of cortisol and higher levels of testosterone. So that tells us at first that we think we should work out in the morning. Okay, I'm all for working out in the morning, but here's what we have to remember. A lot of people say that working out in the morning is better because testosterone levels are higher. Well, I have another study that I have to reference that proves that that isn't necessarily the point.

The Journal of Applied Physiology published a study that found that muscle protein synthesis was actually higher in women post-workout than it was in men, despite the fact that men had 45 times higher testosterone levels after the workout.

So I know this was a lot, but the general point of this is 30% more protein, timing your fast how I suggested, and I know it's complex. And the other days, eat a lot more protein and add those autophagy- boosting foods. So this will help you build muscle. And I'm sorry it was long-winded, but I had to explain it. As always, make sure you're keeping it locked in here on my channel and I'll see you in the next video.

Intermittent Fasting over Age 40: Complete Guide

Intermittent Fasting over Age 40 : The Complete Guide
Thomas Delauer

Hormone modulation/Libido

two 20 hour fasts - more GH response

During Fast
salt
catecholamines too high too long, adrenal fatigue, allocate caffeine to morning, have it in morning to catecholamines aren't constantly elevated
working out in fasted state

Eating during window:
prebiotic fibers (resetting gut biome)
Avoid Grains
higher protein intake
Switching proteins out, get diverse meals
Saturated fats

Additional Supps
men should take boron
iodine in through seaweed
saw palmetto
CoQ10 (foods that boost it)

Diet Breaks
1 full week off after 6-8 weeks "diet breaks" bring calories back up to maintenance

Insulin Sensitivity

When you fast for an extended period of time, the fat deposits that have accumulated over time become the fuel that cells need to operate. As a result, the size of the excess fat droplet gets smaller over time.

As the size of the lipid droplet in muscle and liver cells decrease, those cells become more responsive to insulin. In other words, by reducing the size of the fat droplet, insulin becomes more powerful

Study - American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Nonobese subjects (8 men and 8 women) fasted every other day for 22 d

Subjects lost 2.5 +/- 0.5% of their initial body weight and 4 +/- 1% of their initial fat mass

Glucose and ghrelin did not change significantly from baseline with alternate-day fasting, whereas fasting insulin decreased 57 +/- 4%

Triiodothyronine (T3) is a thyroid hormone that plays vital roles in the body's metabolic rate, heart and digestive functions, muscle control, brain development - it affects almost every physiological process in the body

Thyroxine (T4) is the main hormone secreted into the bloodstream by the thyroid gland. It plays vital roles in digestion, heart and muscle function, brain development and maintenance of bones

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (also known as thyrotropin or TSH) is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine (T4), and then triiodothyronine (T3) which stimulates the metabolism of almost every tissue in the body

Length of fasting should be based off the effects of GH and cortisol

Growth Hormone

HGH deficiency in adults typically leads to higher levels of body fat, lower lean body mass and decreased bone mass (osteopenia)

HGH only lasts a few minutes in the bloodstream - it goes to the liver for metabolism, where it is converted into a number of other growth factors, the most important of which is Insulin Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF1)

Study - Growth Hormone & IGF Research

24 h of fasting led to an increase in levels of basal free GH, mean free GH, mean total GH whilst GHBP levels remained similar in 7 female and 4 male normal-weight subjects

Concluded that a 24-hour fast leads to parallel increases in free and total GH levels whilst having no change in GHBP levels or the fraction of free GH

The protein-retaining effects of growth hormone during fasting involve inhibition of muscle-protein breakdown

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that GH may be a principal mediator of protein conservation during fasting and to assess the underlying mechanisms

During Fast

Lowering insulin rids the body of excess salt and water. Insulin causes salt and water retention in the kidney

Have Majority of Caffeine in the Morning

Elevated catecholamines + caffeine = adrenal burnout

Work Out Fasted

The Journal of Physiology

Exercise in the fasted state facilitates fibre type-specific intramyocellular lipid breakdown and stimulates glycogen resynthesis in humans

Eating Window

Higher Protein Intake

Published in International Journal of Obesity, researchers looked at protein intake and lean body mass preservation during energy intake restriction in overweight older adults

Best Protein Sources for Vegan Keto - Thomas DeLauer

So you're hot on doing the keto thing, but you're plant-based and you don't know how you're going to get your protein without kicking you out of ketosis. It's a very viable concern and it's quite frankly, probably the reason why most vegans don't try a ketogenic protocol. They feel like a ketogenic protocol is all protein and the only way that you can get your protein is either by eating a bunch of soy or by combining a bunch of starches.

Well, the good news is there are some ways around that, and quite honestly, they're tasty ways and they're ways that might end up enriching your life. I'll break down how to get protein on a plant-based keto diet and how to do it properly, and also share the truth with you, so that you don't fall victim to having to eat a bunch of things you don't need to be eating.

First off, we have the soy equation. I'm not the biggest fan of soy, but I do think in small amounts it's okay. You're going to get all of your nine essential amino acids from soy. That's the benefit. However, you probably are aware of the negatives. Obviously the estrogen mimicking components; soy mimics estrogen, so it triggers sort of a vicious cycle of estrogen kind of piling up and then your body not being able to process it and you get all this toxicity and what's called 16 hydroxy estrogen. It's all these different things that are not good. But the other side of the equation is you've got what are called anti-nutrients in it. Anti-nutrients are phytates and things that prevent minerals from actually absorbing.

Secondly, you can have hemp. Hemp is going to have all nine of your essentials. I recommend leaning on hemp whenever can, whether you have hempeh, which is like a fermented hemp that's made into a patty or whatever, or you just have straight up hemp hearts. High fat, so super good when it comes down to keto. You just don't want to be skewing too high down the omega-6 road. That's the other issue that vegans face, is omega-3 to omega-6 balance. I'm going to talk about that in a second.

Nutritional yeast. This is a great way to get an abundance of amino acids. Let's say you're having some hemp hearts and you're having a flax egg that you've made like a nice flax cake with and then you're just looking for something else just to sprinkle on to get some extra amino acids, make a cheese out of nutritional yeast or something like that with a little bit of water. There you go. You've got your essential amino acids coming in.

Another thing that I recommend is sacha inchi. This is like a seed and a lot of times it's made into a powder or you can straight up eat the seed that's been roasted or anything like that. A nice complete amino acid profile with the essentials and very low carb.

But one of the things that I really have to address here, and this is something that non-plant-based dieters don't always understand, but a lot of plant-based dieters do, is that pea protein is probably one of the most powerful proteins that you can consume.

There's a study that was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition that took a look at test subjects and had them consume either pea protein, whey protein or a placebo.

161 males, aged 18 to 35 years underwent 12 weeks of resistance training on upper limb muscles:

Pea protein (n = 53), Whey protein (n = 54) or Placebo (n = 54) group

All had to take 25 g of the proteins or placebo twice a day during the 12-week training period

Increases in thickness were significantly greater in the Pea group as compared to Placebo whereas there was no difference between Whey and Pea

Performing a sensitivity study on the weakest participants (with regards to strength at inclusion), thickness increases were significantly different between groups (+20.2%, +15.6% and +8.6% for Pea, Whey and Placebo, respectively)

Increase in the maximum concentric torque between D0 and D84 was +8.8 N.m for the Placebo group, +10.9 N.m for Whey group and +10.7 N.m for Pea group

Lead and Cadmium Could Be in Your Dark Chocolate

Lead and Cadmium Could Be in Your Dark Chocolate
By Kevin Loria

Consumer Reports found dangerous heavy metals in chocolate from Hershey's, Theo, Trader Joe's and other popular brands. Here are the ones that had the most, and some that are safer.

For many of us, chocolate is more than just a tasty treat. It’s a mood lifter, an energy booster, a reward after a tough day, a favorite holiday gift.

People also choose dark chocolate in particular for its potential health benefits, thanks to studies that suggest its rich supply of antioxidants may improve heart health and other conditions, and for its relatively low levels of sugar. In fact, more than half of people in a recent survey from the National Confectioners Association described dark chocolate as a “better for you” candy.

But there’s a dark side to this “healthier” chocolate. Research has found that some dark chocolate bars contain cadmium and lead—two heavy metals linked to a host of health problems in children and adults.

The chocolate industry has been grappling with ways to lower those levels. To see how much of a risk these favorite treats pose, Consumer Reports scientists recently measured the amount of heavy metals in 28 dark chocolate bars. They detected cadmium and lead in all of them.

Heavy Metals in Dark Chocolate
CR tested a mix of brands, including smaller ones, such as Alter Eco and Mast, and more familiar ones, like Dove and Ghirardelli.

For 23 of the bars, eating just an ounce a day would put an adult over a level that public health authorities and CR’s experts say may be harmful for at least one of those heavy metals. Five of the bars were above those levels for both cadmium and lead.

That’s risky stuff: Consistent, long-term exposure to even small amounts of heavy metals can lead to a variety of health problems. The danger is greatest for pregnant people and young children because the metals can cause developmental problems, affect brain development, and lead to lower IQ, says Tunde Akinleye, the CR food safety researcher who led this testing project.

“But there are risks for people of any age,” he says. Frequent exposure to lead in adults, for example, can lead to nervous system problems, hypertension, immune system suppression, kidney damage, and reproductive issues. While most people don’t eat chocolate every day, 15 percent do, according to the market research firm Mintel. Even if you aren’t a frequent consumer of chocolate, lead and cadmium can still be a concern. It can be found in many other foods—such as sweet potatoes, spinach, and carrots—and small amounts from multiple sources can add up to dangerous levels. That’s why it’s important to limit exposure when you can.

Still, you don’t need to swear off chocolate entirely, Akinleye says. He adds that while most of the chocolate bars in CR’s tests had concerning levels of lead, cadmium, or both, five of them were relatively low in both. “That shows it’s possible for companies to make products with lower amounts of heavy metals—and for consumers to find safer products that they enjoy,” he says.

And in addition to choosing your dark chocolates wisely, there are a number of other steps you can take to continue enjoying chocolate safely.

CR's Chocolate Test ResultsWe tested 28 dark chocolate bars for lead and cadmium. To determine the risk posed by the chocolates in CR’s test, we used California's maximum allowable dose level (MADL) for lead (0.5 micrograms) and cadmium (4.1mcg). Shown are the percentages of the MADL supplied in an ounce of each chocolate. Our results indicate which products had comparatively higher levels and are not assessments of whether a product exceeds a legal standard. We used those levels because there are no federal limits for the amount of lead and cadmium most foods can contain, and CR’s scientists believe that California’s levels are the most protective available. While both cadmium and lead pose serious health risks, products within each category are listed in order of lead level, because that heavy metal poses particular concerns and no amount of it is considered safe.Below 100% CR's levelsAbove 100% CR's levelsSafer Choices

Cacao's Dark Side
Chocolate is made from the cacao bean, which has two main components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Together, these are called cacao or cocoa.

Dark chocolate’s reputation as a relatively healthy treat stems mostly from the cocoa solids. These are packed with flavanols, which are antioxidants linked to improved blood vessel function, reduced inflammation, and lower cholesterol. Dark chocolate is also lower in sugar and higher in fiber than milk chocolate, and it has magnesium and potassium. Unfortunately, cocoa solids are also where the heavy metals, especially cadmium, lurk. That makes it tricky to balance dark chocolate’s risks and benefits.

Some of the same concerns may extend to products made with cocoa powder—which is essentially pure cocoa solids—such as hot cocoa, and brownie and cake mixes, though they have varying amounts of cacao and possibly heavy metals.

Dark chocolate tends to be higher in heavy metals than milk chocolate, probably because of its higher cacao content. There is no official cutoff, but dark chocolates are generally at least 65 percent cacao by weight, says Michael J. DiBartolomeis, PhD, a toxicologist and former official at the California Department of Public Health who has researched heavy metals in chocolate.

Getting the Lead and Cadmium Out
To further complicate the issue, lead and cadmium appear to get into cacao in different ways, which means that each requires a different type of fix, DiBartolomeis says.

Between 2019 and 2022, he and other researchers studied how metals might contaminate cacao, as part of a settlement to a lawsuit against chocolate manufacturers brought by As You Sow, an organization that pushes for corporate accountability. As You Sow had previously found high levels of lead and cadmium in some chocolates.

The researchers found that cacao plants take up cadmium from the soil, with the metal accumulating in cacao beans as the tree grows. That’s similar to how heavy metals contaminate some other foods.

But lead seems to get into cacao after beans are harvested. The researchers found that the metal was typically on the outer shell of the cocoa bean, not in the bean itself. Moreover, lead levels were low soon after beans were picked and removed from pods but increased as beans dried in the sun for days. During that time, lead-filled dust and dirt accumulated on the beans. “We collected beans on the ground that were heavily loaded with lead on the outer shell,” DiBartolomeis says.

Because of the different ways that cadmium and lead get into chocolate, addressing the contamination requires different solutions.

Sign CR’s Petition Urging the Makers of Dark Chocolate to Get Heavy Metals out of Their Products!

For lead, that will mean changes in harvesting and manufacturing practices, says Danielle Fugere, president of As You Sow. Such practices could include minimizing soil contact with beans as they lie in the sun, and drying beans on tables or clean tarps away from roads or with protective covers, so lead-contaminated dust won’t land on them. Another option is finding ways to remove metal contaminants when beans are cleaned at factories, Fugere says.

Solving for cadmium is trickier, though it is possible, DiBartolomeis says. Carefully breeding or genetically engineering plants to take up less of the heavy metal could help, though that could take several years. Other potential options include replacing older cacao trees with younger ones, because cadmium levels tend to increase as the plants get older, and removing or treating soil known to be contaminated with cadmium.

Safer Chocolate
More immediately, DiBartolomeis says, chocolate makers should survey cacao-growing areas to determine cadmium levels, and favor beans from places with lower levels. If necessary, they should blend beans from higher-cadmium areas with beans with lower levels, as some manufacturers do now. Alex Whitmore, CEO at Taza, which makes one of the products with lower levels of both metals in CR’s tests, says that’s what his company does, mixing beans from “different origins to ensure that the final product” has lower levels.

The National Confectioners Association, which funded the research into heavy metals in chocolate as part of the As You Sow settlement, says “lead reductions can be expected within the first year of implementing new handling practices,” though it says lowering cadmium may take longer.

Some manufacturers with higher levels of metals in our tests said their products are below levels set by the settlement. Others said that the metals occur naturally in soil and that they take steps to try to reduce it. Alter Eco, Endangered Species, Theo, and Trader Joe’s did not respond.

Taking steps to reduce heavy metals in cacao can pay off: CR’s test results, after all, show that while contamination with heavy metals is common, it is not inevitable.

And in addition to choosing products with lower levels of lead and cadmium, other steps can also help reduce the risks. In fact, DiBartolomeis says that while he cautions pregnant people and children from eating dark chocolate, he doesn’t tell most people to give it up, just to know the risks and not overdo it.

Better Ways to Eat Dark Chocolate
Calculating the exact amount of dark chocolate that’s risky to eat is complicated. That’s because heavy metal levels can vary, people have different risk levels, and chocolate is just one potential source of heavy metal exposure. But experts say that by being mindful of the risks, you can still enjoy dark chocolate while minimizing the potential harms.

Choose dark chocolates with the lowest levels of heavy metals. CR’s tests found five chocolates—one each from Mast, Taza, and Valrhona, and two from Ghirardelli—with relatively low levels of both lead and cadmium. Eight more are lower in only lead, and 10 others in just cadmium. Only five bars—one each from Green & Black’s, Lily’s (owned by the Hershey company), and Trader Joe’s, and two from Theo—were higher for both heavy metals.

Treat chocolate as a treat. A single ounce of even one of the chocolates with the highest cadmium and lead levels in CR’s tests is unlikely to cause any immediate harm. The risk comes with frequent consumption over time. Heavy metals are also in certain other foods, including many that are more nutritious and important to eat as a regular parts of a healthy diet, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach. So it’s best to eat dark chocolate only occasionally. “Having a serving a few days a week, especially with a product that has lower levels, means you can eat dark chocolate without worrying unduly,” says CR’s Tunde Akinleye, who oversaw the chocolate tests.

Try dark chocolates with lower cacao percentages. If you’re considering a bar that CR didn’t test, so the heavy metal content is unknown, you may want to opt for a 70 percent dark chocolate product over an 80 percent one, for example, or a 65 percent bar over a 70 percent one. That’s not a foolproof measure, but CR’s tests, as well as testing done by other organizations, suggest that cadmium levels tend to increase with the percentage of cacao. (Lead levels don’t seem to be as closely tied to cacao percentage.)

Alternate with milk chocolate. Cacao levels are lower in milk chocolate than in dark chocolate, so milk chocolate tends to have lower levels of heavy metals, DiBartolomeis says. But that doesn’t mean you can eat it with abandon: It has a lot more added sugars. So it is best to eat both kinds of chocolates only occasionally, not every day.

Don’t assume organic dark chocolates are safer. In CR’s tests, they were just as likely as other products to have concerning levels of heavy metals.

Don’t give kids much dark chocolate. Dark chocolate isn’t a big hit with most kids, which is just as well, considering the younger you are, the bigger the threat from heavy metals. Pregnant people should limit consumption as well.

Think about your total chocolate consumption. We did not test for heavy metals in cocoa powder, hot cocoa mixes, or other chocolate desserts. But they contain cocoa solids, too, so they could contribute to your heavy metal intake.

Eat a well-rounded diet. Switching up the foods you eat may help you avoid overconsumption of heavy metals from other sources. Grapes, apples, green tea, and certain other healthy foods can even provide some of the same flavanols that chocolate supplies. Plus, doing this can help provide a variety of nutrients that may help offset some of the harm that heavy metals do. These include calcium, iron, selenium, vitamin C, and zinc.
