I'm such a Push-Over

Dear Diary,.....

LOL!!!

Anyhow, let me just preface this by saying that in my personal life I am kinda short-tempered (working on that, of course), as a driver I am impossibly aggressive (working on this one as well) and socially I'm quite extroverted (that one doesnt bother me)....however....

in my professional life I am unusually mellow and patient...(part of it I attribute to just not taking it too seriously). Thus, in most cases I am always the one that kinda laughs it off and lets it roll off her back.

For my job, Ive gotta deal with a bunch of vendors, whom my dept. rightfully regards as complete morons ( Im sure they call us the same or worse between themselves).

And my feelings about the vendors have always been very strange--I often act like a pushover with them and let them take advantage of that sometimes ...just...the relationship is strange 'cause they wanna make u happy and keep your business, still they are a totally seperate entity...and I kinda look at it this way: it'd be the cowardy and ugly thing to do to treat them like the playing field is not leveled 'cause I have my institution behind my back. (I also think that this kinda hyper politeness has occured because of some terrible bosses I've had in the past--I do believe that once u have a bad boss, u always treat ppl much nicer)

Ok, halfway there...

So, I had this project from about 3 months ago ...contacted the vendor to get it fixed and something that should've been fixed in less than a month, just never went anywhere....and I waited and waited ( to be honest the project is absolutely stupid and insignificant, so waiting was OK)

MY boss checks on the pr. yesterday 'cause the freaking CEO has brought it up...and I'm like uhm...OK....and while my boss loves me and knows that that particular vendor is hard to work with ....I know I'm looking like an ass..

Anyhow, I call the kid in the morning and let him know very honestly what's going on and kinda laid it down on him, u gotta give me a date before the end of the week. He very kindly blows me off by saying I'll call u before the end of the work day.

Before my boss leaves early that day she says..."OK if this shmuk doesnt give us an answer by tomorrow, I'm calling the pres. of the co."

Toward the end of the day I was watching the clock,..tic-tac, tic-tac...5 mins before the end of the day I called the guy and told him, again, very honestly exactly what was gonna happen in the morning if there wasnt an e-mail from him waiting for me, come 9 a.m.

So, there was an e-mail, and that's not the point.

Then my boss comes over and asks me about the thing and if he gave me too much grief, and sweet, cheeky T from my dept. tells her "Oh, she put him in his place. U should've heard her go after him"

I'd never felt so silly in my prof. life!! (mentally I was trying to just shut T's mouth)

I DONT want to be that person! I dont want to be an OGRE at work! It kinda hurt that I was perceived that way ( btw, she's a really sweet girl and she meant it as a compliment) + she's very young (even younger than me) and doesnt always get it

Later that day I was like, Sweet T,...I dont think u got it, I WAS trying to be a NICE Guy (dudette)!! + save this guy a yelling from his co's president + potential demotion, etc.....If I wanted to be mean I would have not called at all and let it roll into the morning and let the chips fall where they may ...

Hope somebody Agrees?

(sorry, I'm usually not a fan of the potty-mouthed exchanges, but U strike me as somebody who's not necessarily the sharpest knife in the drawer)

OK, let's take it up a notch. You should care and be aware of the way others perceive you, both professionally and personally. Just don't micromanage it. If this is an isolated example and given the fact that the Т in question is not the smartest cookie in the jar, there's no need to waste valuable resources on analyzing what happened and why.
