Bulgaria's FC CSKA Sold to Indian Steel Tycoon
Sports: 9 October 2006, Monday.
Bulgarian FC CSKA Sofia changed its owner on October 6, reports say.
The club has been acquired by Indian tycoon Pramod Mittal, CEO of Ispat and owner of Bulgaria's largest steel maker Kremikovtsi Global Steel.
Mittal bought 100% of the club's shares from the previous owner of CSKA - Nove Holding, 24 Hours daily claims, adding that to avoid publicity, the negotiations were held mainly in Paris. The transaction should be finalized and made public within a week.
The head of CSKA's press office Atanas Karaivanov said he has not heard of this transaction, while the press office of Kremikovtsi declined comment.
This is the second sale of a Bulgarian heavyweight football club after Levski Sofia was sold to the controversial Russia-born businessman Michael Chorny.
FC CSKA finished the 2005/06 season as Bulgarian Cup winners. The legendary club is living through a deep crisis after its boss Vassil Bozhkov, chief of Nove Holding, opened all-players sale-off. He also quit the competition for the National Cup.
The Mittal family is one of the richest in the world. Lakshmi Mittal, elder brother of Pramod, was ranked third wealthies man in the world by Forbes - with an approximate wealth of USD 25 B.
