Dr Jonathan Palmer has been convicted for 'negligent homicide' in Portugal.
The former Formula One ace, commentator, and now owner of British race-tracks, was involved in a head-on road accident in the country some eight years ago.
He was driving a right-hand-drive Honda car, provided for a promotional film.
''I saw a Ford Sierra coming towards me, fast,'' Palmer recalled.
It was driven by a former Rally star, Rein Slattum, who was killed.
''Afterwards I was very agitated,'' Palmer, who was sentenced to seven months in jail, added, ''and I remember exclaiming He was on the wrong side of the road!
''But I soon realised it was me who had been on the wrong side.''
Palmer, 47, is 'relieved' that the case has been concluded, and will not serve time in jail due to a 1999 amnesty for sentences up to one year for foreigners.
His lawyers, nonetheless, are considering an appeal.
