Re: Kakvo mislite?
Разбираемо е защо някой ще напише: "The country has been taken over by so many different groups like the Thracians, the Romans, the Turks and even the Communists, that even the people are a bit of a mix. Some have the olive skin and dark eyes from the country’s Middle Eastern influences while others are fair-skinned with light eyes like many Europeans." Ами девойката не си е направила труда да прочете Кирилкината книга, но може би е прелистила и разгледала картинките, за да си направи изводи като този....
Мен лично най-много ме заболя от пасажа: "As a country, it never really developed its own identity. It is not known for any one product or tradition."

I live in the US and attend the second oldest public high school in the country. I was born in Sofia, capital of that “country without any identity”. You know, the one you “couldn’t find on a map”. I don’t know about you but I knew world geography quite well back when I was still living in my tiny “village” of Sofia. To clear up some things, a place that has 100,000 residents (like Veliko Turnovo) is considered a city not a village or a suburb. I saw your article and I though cool someone visited my country so of course I wanted to read it. You started off with your “Bulgarian wear” which I might add is worn by the gypsies in our country who aren’t really popular or Bulgarian for that matter. As far your clothes- do you need a 24/7 fashion adviser or are you just plain stupid? I’m Bulgarian and I don’t wear blue “half-tops” (what is that by the way, some new style you invented?) or lame “gold-high heels”! But I’ll let that one pass, in my school I’ve seen a lot worse done by the “all-American girl”. By my American standards, there are plenty of 5 star hotels all over Bulgaria and maybe its because you couldn’t afford to stay in them that you had to be in a hostel, so don’t try to make it seem like it’s the only place a tourist can go.
You whine about no air conditioning, that’s not a mandatory requirement in the US either, I’m sorry you had issues with that but its up to you to figure out where you’re going to sing and if they don’t accommodate you bring a fan, stop whining about it! The only person who has an air conditioner in my school is the principle but I’m not dropping out of school because of that even though the temps in September can go past 100F. There is one thing I have to congratulate you one, your description of the sky is really something beautiful so thank you for that, it’s a nice reminder of where home was!
So Bulgarians have had “a rough history”, name a country that hasn’t! Besides, our history spans almost 14 centuries of course you’re going to have some bad times, but you don’t even bother to read about the topic so you’re sort of giving a “blind eye view” and I’m curious to know who would be interested in that? Going back to the history, which you really don’t know, the Thracians were the inhabitants of Bulgaria and never took over the country. IT WAS THEIR HOME! So technically, I’m their descendant! The communists were Bulgarian as well (with a very strong Russian alcoholic influence), proving that every country has its idiots and merciless butchers. The last half century was the darkest page of our history but it did not take away our dignity or identity. Just because you didn’t bother to look it up doesn’t allow you to write every dumb thing that comes to mind! According to you, we go “about our lives, enjoying our own music, own literature, and own religion”-but despite this we don’t have your definition of an identity (the dictionary is a tool for the wise)!?!
The Cyrillic alphabet does not “look” like Russian, that language is based on the Cyrillic alphabet along with several other Eastern European countries. Here’s a short history lesson (from a high schooler to an undergrad, who would have though that would happen): The alphabet was written by Sts. Cyrill and Methodius, and their pupils Climent and Naum were invited by the Bulgarian king Boris I in 881-882 AD to further develop the alphabet into a language making Bulgaria the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet. The finished work was then given to Russia as a present, but after years of Stalin that fact has been denied, and most Russians still insist that the saints were born in Russia even though they never set foot in the country in their lives. It’s difficult to deal with brainwashing, but ignorance in an article is just annoying!
After paragraph upon paragraph of insult, I have to say the pinnacle was the thing about “barrel-shaped women”! Come on now, sixty, seventy, even eighty year old women in a field are no match for Cindy Crawford. Don’t you feel the least bit ashamed to write that, considering 60% of adolescents (not grandmothers) in the US are overweight. If you’ve ever watched CNN or ABC you might have heard that in any country overseas Americans are considered arrogant and often treated with contempt, maybe now you’ll realize why certain things such as your writing can cause any Bulgarian to feel insulted!
Fortunately, you don’t seem to represent Americans because after years of living here I know many Americans who would never write such things and I consider them very good friends.
It’s sad to see that after travelling close to 15,000 miles to a foreign country you return with such a distorted view and very bad judgement. The good thing is this characterizes only you, and has nothing to do with Bulgarians or Americans at all!

P.S. to the Associated Press: don’t you have one editor or consultant with a minimal knowledge of the current world or maybe some culture?
