Hyperion by Dan Simmons, 1990, 482 pages
Editorial Reviews Amazon.com
On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope--and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.
A stunning tour de force, this Hugo Award-winning novel is the first volume in a remarkable new science fiction epic by the author of The Hollow Man.
The New York Times Book Review, Gerald Jonas
Each of [the pilgrim's] stories would make a superb novella on its own.
Book Description
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law and the reach of twenty-eighth-century science, waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to the Time Tombs. They seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives, and they have resolved to die before discovering anything less than the secrets of the universe itself. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

Endymion by Dan Simmons, December 1996, 624 pages
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Two hundred and seventy-four years after the fall of the WorldWeb in Fall of Hyperion, Raoul Endymion is sent on a quest. Retrieving Aenea from the Sphinx before the Church troops reach her is only the beginning. With help from a blue-skinned android named A. Bettik, Raoul and Aenea travel the river Tethys, pursued by Father Captain Frederico DeSoya, an influential warrior-priest and his troops. The shrike continues to make enigmatic appearances, and while many questions were raised in Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, still more are raised here. Raoul's quest will continue in at least one more volume.
This series has something for everyone: Simmons's prose is imaginative and stylistically varied; point-of-view and time-scale are handled with finesse; the action is always gripping; the device of Old Earth allows Simmons to work in entertaining references to present-day culture; and the technology raises bizarre questions of ethics and morality in its use of repeated death and resurrection. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Midwest Book Review
Perhaps the most spectacular find of the year is this beautiful story of a hero's rescue of a young time-travelling girl and their adventures escaping from the neo-religious Pax pursuers who want to stop them from changing the universe. As the two swirl down the eddies of time via raft (shades of Huck Finn!), accompanied by a near-human android companion, they face many dangers and fulfill the predictions of an epic prophecy poem. Simmons creates a compelling plot which is difficult to stop reading. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Book Description
The multiple-award-winning science fiction master returns to the universe that is his greatest triumph--the world of Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion --with a novel even more magnificent than its predecessors.
Dan Simmons's Hyperion was an immediate sensation on its first publication in 1989. This staggering multifaceted tale of the far future heralded the conquest of the science fiction field by a man who had already won the World Fantasy Award for his first novel (Song of Kali) and had also published one of the most well-received horror novels in the field, Carrion Comfort. Hyperion went on to win the Hugo Award as Best Novel, and it and its companion volume, The Fall of Hyperion, took their rightful places in the science fiction pantheon of new classics.
Now, six years later, Simmons returns to this richly imagined world of technological achievement, excitement, wonder and fear. Endymion is a story about love and memory, triumph and terror--an instant candidate for the field's highest honors.
Ingram
In a story of love, memory, triumph, and terror, written by the recipient of the World Fantasy Award and author of Hyperion, Raul Endymion is selected as the bodyguard to the next messiah and must rescue the girl from the enigmatic Shrike. Reprint.
