Seven Levels of E-business

E-business can be divided into seven levels as follows:

1) Web Presence - A company has set up a Web site, which includes some company

information, but no capability to communicate, let alone transact, with anyone.

2) Structured Web Content - A company has set up a Web site that follows a

consistent pattern for content, includes a keyword search engine, links to other

helpful sites and provides an option for outside parties to communicate with the

company. The site may include a product catalog, but provides no facilities for

ordering online.

3) Basic E-commerce - A company has set up the Web site to allow for the selling

of information, goods or services over the Internet. However, the system is not

connected to any back-end business systems (i.e., accounting, manufacturing,

inventory systems). It is slow, inefficient and not very secure. Oftentimes, it

requires taking orders over the Internet and then re-inputting those orders into

the company's order entry system for fulfillment. Orders are usually completed by

customers phoning or faxing payment information to the company instead of

through any online process. More time was spent on design of the Web site than

on overall design of system integration.

4) Internal Integrated E-business - A company has set up a front-end sales

Web site that is functionally integrated to its back-end accounting business

system. It uses secure protocols to transmit data and conduct transactions

between the company and its customers or other business parties (suppliers,

partners, etc.). Online payments can be taken. Once integrated from an

accounting and sales perspective, it now begins to expand into collaborative

efforts with external parties.

5) External Data Integrated E-business - A company has set up an integrated

system based on open architecture standards that allows it to integrate data

within a specific external supply chain. Each member of the supply chain now

communicates and conducts transactions seamlessly with other members along

the supply chain to allow for immediate responses to consumer changes in

demand. Each member now focuses on its core competencies and becomes one

part of a complete virtual enterprise that provides products and services to a

specific end consumer.

6) External Process Integrated E-business - This is an enhancement of Level 5 that

adds complete integration down to the process level so, in addition to exchanging

data, business partners have all conformed their procedures to mesh with each

other. Business now can move in a coordinated step-by-step process from

company to company. This is a huge undertaking that may take longer to achieve

than Level 7.

7) Mobile World E-business - All chip-based mobile and stationary devices will be

interconnected to create one huge information resource. The devices will be able

to interchange any type of information on an object-oriented level. Applications

will be transparent to these devices. Virtual enterprises will seamlessly transmit

data among virtual enterprises to provide products, services, answers to any end

user's needs, with the end user not really knowing where the answers to their

problems came from.



The chart below graphically depicts the seven levels of e-business discussed above.

Companies can use this chart as a tool to find vendors able to provide software

solutions to meet their intended e-business requirements:
