A Lightweight version of the new M3 will properly be the star of BMW's
stand at the Frankfurt Motor show. The one off wearing the celebrated "CSL"
badge from BMW's mid-1970's legendary flyweight. The M3 CSL claims to weigh
in at 1295kg, under cutting the standard M3 by 200kg & sharpening it's
already impressive performance. A brand new bodyshell using carbonfibre
roof, doors, boot-lid, front air-dam & exterior mirror housings. Inside
seats are replaced with hard-shell racing chairs, with the rear seats
removed & a special thin replacement rear glass window. Parts of the floor
pan & bulkhead have been reworked using fashionable honeycombe material
instead of the conventional steel. The CSL still retains many standard
features including airbags, steering wheel, electric windows & central
locking.
Under the bonnet the M3's engine is beefed up version of the 3.2 Litre
in-line six all alloy powerplant, using low friction internals. It is
rumored that the M-Engineers have coaxed up to 370Bhp out of the reworked
engine, an increase of 27Bhp over the standard unit. This gives the M3 CSL
the power to weight ratio of 286Bhp per tonne - 68% more than the standard
M3. 0-60 Mph figures hint at at time of 4.5 secs, engineers have lapped the
Nurburgring circuit some 30secs quicker than the standard M3, which is very
close the record, set last month by a 620Bhp TechArt Porsche 911. BMW
insiders have ruled out the new M3 CSL ever going into production in this
extreme form as using the "exotic" materials would make even a limited run
too expensive, but a less high-tech lightweight M3 could be on the cards
