"CONCLUSION
The Macedonian nationalist movement developed similarly to other non-dominant ethnic groups nationalisms. The initial phase of development of Macedonian nationalism (phase A) was rather cultural. During this period (1814-1870) Macedonian activists, like Pejchinovich, Hadzhikonstantinov, Zografski, and the Miladinov brothers, were concerned about the attempts of the Greek influenced Patriarchate to Hellenise the Slavic speakers in the region of southern Balkans. In the anti- Hellinist struggle, these Macedonians closely colaborated with the Bulgarian national elite. Due to the medieval legacy that refered to the Slavs in the region as Bulgarians and the cooperation with their Bulgarian counterparts throughout the first half of the XIX century Macedonian national leaders developed a Bulgarian, as opposed to an "other", Greek, identity. Fighitng the Greek dominance in the region, Macedonian leaders, together with Bulgarians, initially struglled for the introduction of the Slavic vernacular in church services, and later for establishment of an indigenous church. During phase A, the Macedonian elite also took an interest in the Macedonian history and the language.
Up to the 1860's Macedonians closely cooperated with the Bulgarian intellectuals and proposed to form a joined literary language. However, since the Bulgarian intellegentsia was largely based in the North(eastern) part of the region and inaguarated that dialect to be the only suitable in the formation of the Bulgarian literary language, the Macedonian national leaders were left in a limbo"
