KIRIL AND METODIJ
Kiril and Metodij are the founders of the Macedonian literacy. They protected the position's of Christianity, and accepted their mission to Moravia to organise the church and to oppose Germany. For this reason, Kiril created the alphabet "Glagolica" and wrote the necessary church books, which was in the same time the first Macedonian literary language. Kiril and Metodij became the creators of the first Macedonian alphabet.
Konstantin, Metodij and 10 of their students went to Moravia in 863 in a special mission: to educate Rostislav's people, and to spread Christianity in a understandable language. This meant that in that time, the language of the Macedonian was very similar with the people of Moravia.
The Macedonian missionary's were greeted by the prince Rostislav with great respect, where soon they succeeded with great achievements to educate the people. Although they educated many people, the German priesthood did not accept the defeat and started to send calumny letters to the Pope in Rome. They attacked the work of the brothers from Solun, and that is why the Pope called Konstantin and Metodij to explain themselves.
The brothers announced their arrival in Rome, and informed the Pope that they were bringing the bones from the Pope St. Kliment. They were greeted with honour by the Pope and the people, where Konstantin and Metodij succeeded to explain and prove that they were right. The Pope then blessed their liturgy, giving them the right to continue with the work. This was followed by a big liturgy which was held in Rome.
Till then Konstantin received a priest title, and he became a monarch and as it was customary, change his name to Kiril.
Meanwhile Kiril became very ill in Rome and before going back to Moravia, he died in 869. His grave can still be found in the church St. Kiril, in the city of Rome. With deep pain from this loss, Metodij was on his way to Moravia with his students, but they did not reach their goal, because the German's destroyed Rostislav, and they stopped in Panonija. They were also followed by the German priesthood. Metodij was then sent to prison and torched , while his students were persecuted, locked up, taken to markets, and sold throughout Europe.
Unable to cope with the physical pain, Metodij died in 885, far away from the fatherland.

KLIMENT AND NAUM OHRIDSKI
The followers of Kiril and Metodij in Macedonia are their closest collaborators Kliment and Naum.
Kliment Ohridski (835-916) was a great Macedonian educator, translator, and the first writer in the history of Macedonian literature. He was an extremely intelligent follower of the great accomplishments of the two brothers from Solun, Kiril and Metodij, who led the people to the path of culture and progress. Kliment Ohridskis' work played a significant role in the development of the Macedonian culture and literacy. Especially important was the University of Ohrid, which he founded it had an enrolment of 3500 students. He wrote a book about Kiril, and is considered to be the creator of the "Kirilica", which today has been made contemporary, for the official alphabet of many people.
The oldest and well kept Kiril's monument has been found in Macedonia, that is on the tomb stone.
In the year of 893 when Kliment was sent on his mission to Moravia, and from his place as a replacement in Kutmicevica came Naum, who was a close friend and a fellow traveller of Kliment from the early days of his life. He continued the work of his biggest predecessor, he educated the nation, and became very popular with the people. After seven years of teaching, Naum retreats to a monastery. In the year of 910, Naum Ohridski built his own monastery, today's "Sveti Naum" (St. Naum), in which he was buried after his death in the year of 910.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SAMUEL'S MACEDONIAN STATE
The Macedonians formed into tribes, to oppose the enemy more easily, and some of them grouped into a union, where every tribal union had a prince. Among the tribes that were throughout Macedonia were the Sagudeti (west of Solun), the Rinhini (in the Khalkidhiki Peninsula), the Smoljani (east of the Vardar), the Dragoviti (along the upper and middle reaches of the Vardar and in the Pelagonian Plain), the Berziti (in upper or north-western Macedonia), and the Velegeziti (in southern Macedonia and Thessaly). The tribes that were to the east of the Struma River were called the Strumjani.
The Macedonians in the beginning of the VII century, came under Byzantial Slavery which lasted until the IX century, when the Bulgarian armies started entering Macedonia. The expansion of the Bulgarian state in Macedonia, ended in the middle of the IX century. Then the Bulgarian state often battled, worsened the Macedonian position. That is why in the IX century, they rebelled under the leadership at the son at the Brsjak prince-Samuel, and succeeded to free Macedonia till the end of the X century, and to organise the first state unity of the Macedonian. He proclaimed himself as a tsar, and for a capital at his Kingdom he first chose Prespa then Ohrid.
The Macedonian state during Samuel's rule was very large. It occupied all of Macedonia, where on the south it occupied a piece of Greece, on the north it reached the river Sava and Dunav, on the west to the Adriatic sea, and on the east, all the way to the Black sea. These territories were captured with wars, and although Byzantian at that time was very powerful, he was frightened from the Macedonian state which was expanding very quickly. In the year of 1014, the Byzantian tsar Basil II attacked Samuel's state. He captured and blinded 14,000 of Samuel's soldiers leaving only one eye on every 100th soldier to lead the others back to Samuel's Kingdom. When Samuel saw long rows of his blinded soldiers coming back, he was devastated and died shortly after from a heart attack.
