New brain center opens on campus

The new Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition was established last week in Maharishi Veda Bhavan, with all new, state-of-the-art EEG equipment. A National Brain Conference to be held on campus Friday morning, coinciding with National Brain Awareness Week, will inaugurate the Center and announce to the world the Brain Integration Report Card that will now be available to students.
According to Fred Travis, director of the new Center, the new EEG system, called ActiveTwo and produced in Germany by BioSemi, uses 'active sensors' so that researchers can record EEG while subjects are moving—including Yogic Flying. This is the only system with active sensors.
'The new equipment is amazing,' Dr. Travis said. 'The sensors of the new system can be applied in one-eighth of the time it took with the old equipment, which is a huge time savings for me and the person having his or her EEG recorded. Also, this system has 32, rather than 9, EEG sensors, so we get a much better picture of brain functioning.'
Dr. Travis said that the ActiveTwo system includes sophisticated analysis software to evaluate EEG patterns from many different angles. 'It allows us to map coherence, something we have not been able to do before.'
Another advantage is that the technology is highly portable. Prior to the purchase of the new system, Dr. Travis recently rented the system and took it to Norway for research on Olympic gold medalists. The equipment fit into a carry-on and went with him on the plane. He had the equipment up and ready to begin taking EEG measurements within 15 minutes of arriving.
'Because it's so portable, I can take this equipment to my research subjects, rather than requiring them to come here,' Dr. Travis said.
The research on EEG has made possible in recent years the identification of distinct brain waves in those reporting the experience of enlightenment.
Dr. Travis and colleagues have developed a 'brain wave signature' characteristic of subjects having experiences of Cosmic Consciousness.
This signature includes higher frontal EEG coherence, indicating greater integration of brain functioning; higher alpha and lower gamma power, which indicates that individuals are processing experience more in terms of wholes and less in terms of surface values; and more appropriate brain preparatory responses that match task demands.
The University's EEG research lab had previously been located in the Library/Science Building.
