At life's end, the S40 and its link to Mitsubishi has disappeared, and has made way for a totally new car.
1. Low-end engines are Ford products, while high-ends are Volvo's own straight-fives.
2. Yamaha-Ford 1.6 liter 100 horsepower motor is installed. Slightly further up the road is a 120 horsepower 1.8 liter Duratec powerplant, straight out of the middle range Mondeo.
3. Two diesels will be offered, a 110 horsepower 1.6 liter turbodiesel, and the brilliant new 2.0 liter with 136 horsepower. Of course, you can find all of these motors in any of the other two P-1 cars, and like the C-Max or 3, they all drive through a similar MTX75 manual gearbox as standard.
4. Five cylinders in a row, more often than not assisted by a turbocharger: a Volvo tradition, started in the early days of the 850. The high end S40 will make use of Volvo's 2.4 liter inline five, generating 170 horsepower and equal amounts of torque.
