A. MEDIA WATCH
The Media Watch project can be done with a small core group of five or six people, and so is a good project for a committee of a large, active group or for a new group which needs an action project to sink its teeth into! Each person in the group must take upon him/herself the responsibility for picking one news publication, program or station to monitor every day. (This project can be done in conjunction with a Middle East Information Board). Some of the activities that a Media Watcher can do in responding to the mass media are:
Whenever necessary, the Media Watcher should write a letter or make a phone call to the news organization presenting the program, citing specific dates or reports where the news coverage was not accurate and ask for better presentation. If the reportage was factual, praise the report. In making your call or writing your letter, include the following points:
The name of the reporter or writer of the story.
The date and time of airing or the publication date.
Clearly state that you are a steady listener or reader.
Make it clear what your criticism or praise of the story is. If you were upset, let it be known that you were upset with the way the story was presented.
If the story was sympathetic, make it clear that you were happy with the presentation.
Write Letters to the Editor in rebuttal to hostile letters.
Letters should be written to sponsors of good programs about Israel (the commercials during the program tell you who's paying) and rebuttal to inaccurate information, or advertisers detrimental to Israel.
It is very important that local news sources (college papers, community papers, even handouts and pamphlets) be covered. You might divide your time in 50% local and 50% national media watching.
Always add your name and title if you are part of an organization. In general it is important that your letter or call be RATIONAL. A purely emotional response not tempered with facts does more harm than good.
