Bulgarians and North Macedonians will understand each other to more than 90%, even if they spoke each in their own dialects.
The rest of some 10% or so mainly consists of words rather than grammar. It means that some words are totally different (such as the Bulgarian “obicham” vs the North Macedonian “sakam”) and of the different rendering of one and the same word (such as the word “kakvo” which in Bulgarian means “what” and in North Macedonian means “what kind of”).
The grammar is so-so, meaning there are lots of similarities and lots of differences. But that is according to the North Macedonian grammar as it is NOW, because 100 years ago it was much closer to the standard Bulgarian, which we can see in the North Macedonian folks songs, where many phrases sound rather Bulgarian than “Macedonian”, both in vocabulary and in accent. So for instance, in those old “Macedonian” songs the so-called “double object” (which is typical for the “Macedonian”) isn’t given (which is typical for the Bulgarian language). That “double object” emerged later, probably after WW2. I’ll give you just this one example for that “missing double object” in one of those old “Macedonian” songs:
“Zemi si nozheto, raspori srceto…”
That’s the way how Bulgarians would always say it.
The modern North Macedonian grammar makes a
“Zemi si go nozheto, raspori si go srceto…” out of it.
That little word “go” is the “double object” which doesn’t exist in the Bulgarian language and didn’t exist in the old “Macedonian” dialect, but does exist NOW in the modern “Macedonian” grammar, written after WW2.
I’d like to help you understand what that “double object” means.
In English you can say “Give the book to your brother”, and you can also say “Give him the book”. In both sentences there is only ONE object, namely “your brother” in the first one and “him” in the second one.
In the modern “Macedonian” language you have to say “Give him it the book to your brother” (Daj mu ja knigata na brat ti), which means you have to mention the object TWICE (“him” and “your brother”, but also “it” and “the book” - so you actually have twice a doubled object in just one sentence :D ). And THAT is not typical for the Bulgarian language, but at the same time it was also not typical for the OLD “Macedonian” language prior to the Serbian influence, which shows us that the old “Macedonian” was very close to the Bulgarian language.
Besides, even the accent in those two sentences written above is Bulgarian, since the stressing is on the letter “e” in “nozheto” and “srceto”, where as in the modern “Macedonian” language it is on the letter “o” in “nozheto” resp. on the letter “r” in “srceto”.
Actually, there is no problem for any non-biased linguist to recognize the fact that the modern “Macedonian” is in fact altered Bulgarian language.
