Tearful-Glory.pdf...
The Germans were attacking against the Greek lines with all their means and using Stoukas aircraft were bombarding continuously the fortified lines and mainly Roupel without breaking the Greek defenses. On the side of Lake Doirani all were different because the area was not fortified; the Germans taking advantage of the situation after the capture of Scopje, Belles and Bitolja started marching toward Florina. It was April the 6th when the area of Scopje had been occupied by the Germans. The residents of Scopje welcomed the German and the Bulgarian soldiers as their liberators with flowers, wreaths and Bulgarian flags. They were waiting with enthusiasm their incorporation into the Bulgarian State while on the other side, in the areas of Western Thrace and Eastern Macedonia the Thracians and the Macedonians dressed in black were waiting the beginning of their genocide with the only charge that theywere Thracians, Macedonians children of Greece and not of Bulgaria. More than one hundred thousand residents entered Greece as refugees.
On the Line Metaxas, after hard battles and after the interruption of the lines of communication with the fallen on April the 9thThessaloniki to the Germans, General Bakopoulos had been compelled to surrender weapons, soldiers and strongholds.
...
The Florinians were standing on the sidewalks around the northern and the eastern side of the little park Omonoia and were looking the intruders. There were no flags, no flowers, no labarums, no wreaths but only two Bulgarian Flags suspended by some Bulgarophili on two shops, one on the eastern side of Omonoia on one bakery and the other on the western side on one restaurant; both were waving with the help of the frozen air which had been created by the marching robots of Hitler and by this day of April the 9th 1941.
...
Some Florinians, a few, fewer than the fingers of my two hands had suspended on their balconies or on their doors Bulgarian flags waiting for the Bulgarians to come but in vain because the Bulgarians were not coming; perhaps this could be some solution for them, but the Bulgarians, the barbarians were not coming, they did not come, ah! Now what can become of us without barbarians! Ah! What we will do without Bulgarians!
