Bulgaria to supply electricity outside Balkans
AFP: 11/11/2004
SOFIA, Nov 11 (AFP) - Bulgaria's state electricity company this week signed its first two contracts to supply power outside the Balkans, to the continental European network, the energy ministry said Thursday.
The deals marked Bulgaria's first foray into electricity exports beyond the Balkans.
Under the contracts, the Bulgarian National Electricity Company will supply a total of 100 megawatts an hour to the former first zone of the Union for Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity, the association of transmission system operators in continental Europe which serves about 450 million people.
The energy ministry did not specify which countries would receive the electricity.
Repair of transmission infrastructure destroyed during the war in the former Yugoslavia paved the way for the deals.
During the war in 1991, the UCTE was divided into two zones and Bulgaria, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro remained isolated from the rest of Europe in a so-called second zone.
On October 10, the two UCTE zones were again coordinated after successful trials of new electricity transmission infrastructure built in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bulgaria is the main electricity supplier in the Balkans, delivering about six billion kilowatts an hour.
