Euro chiefs plan to rename yoghurt
European Commission officials are considering forcing shops in Britain to label all yoghurt products as "fermented milk".
Under proposed legislation that could become law next year, all yoghurt sold in Britain would have to be labelled as such because it doesn't conform to the EU definition of a standardised Euro-pudding.
Most would have to be clearly labelled "mild alternate-culture heat-treated fermented milk". Others could omit the words "heat-treated", provided they contained live bacteria.
Brussels would allow 'yoghurt' to be stamped only on desserts made with a traditional type of bitter-tasting live bacteria described in historic Bulgarian recipes, reports the Daily Telegraph.
The Dairy Industries Association Limited, which presides over a British yoghurt market worth Ј730 million a year, called the planned legislation "totally ludicrous".
"British consumers prefer milder-tasting yoghurt. The European Commission is trying to produce standardised European yoghurt like they once tried to produce a standardised Euro-sausage," said Dr Ed Komorowski, the Association's technical director.
Dairy organisations throughout Europe have lobbied against the draft legislation, but it has survived four revisions in the Commission's agriculture division and could become law by early next year
