Voden (Edessa) 8 April 2001
Dear Mr Mayor
On the occasion of inter-Balkan Municipalities conference in Voden you are wellcome to our historical city as president of meeting. We apologize for non direct conduct but Greek police prohibited us to meet you inside conference room claiming a possible provocation.
We represent a recently founded Non Governmental Organization based in Voden (Edessa) under title BULGARIAN HUMAN RIGHTS IN MACEDONIA. On June 2000 we made an appeal of our establishing declaration before the Attorney General of Greek Suprem Court (Arios Pagos), as well before the President of Greek Parliament in Athens, a procedure provided by Greek Law. Allthough we face strong objection by Greek authorities we tried to be registered and recognized having acquired legal existense.
Today “Greek” Macedonia consists a particular sensitive area in Balkans. Recent dispute between Greece and Republic of Macedonia proved the hidden fears of Greek nationalists about evolution of the Bulgarian-Macedonian national movement and its uncontrolled extensions.The terror of a new Kossovo overflies Greece Although is difficult to describe the bad situation of Bulgars living inside Aegean Macedonia it can be easily understood why they didn’t have free ethnic expression taking in account the well known rigid national policy of Greece towards minorities.
Greek State denies to recognize any ethnic group inside its territory claiming the false concept of one-ethnic State consisted exclusively of pure Greeks. Last 130 years antibulgarism is the official tool of Greek propaganda.But the remembrance of 1878 San Stefansca Treaty for Great Bulgaria including Aegean Macedonia, the 1903-1908 national uprising, the 1924 Kalfov-Politis Protocol recognizing Bulgarian minority in “Greek Macedonia” as well as the 1941-1944 struggle of OHRANA’s Bulgarian-Macedonians organized by lieutenant Andon Kalchev, proves that inside Greece exists a numerous Bulgarian ethnic community that remains oppressed.
Today after decades of harsh prosecution we reemerge as a political association having as prime goal the protection of human rights of Bulgars living and working inside Macedonia.
The already mentioned antibulgarism in Greece is expressed mainly by local municipality authorities and can be seen in every aspect of our city’s daily life. So a central road of Edessa, nearby the park of waterfalls is named by municipality as ROAD OF BULGAROCTONUS (the Bulgar slayer) in honor of Roman emperor BASSIL II (858-1025 AD) who commited the biggest attrocity in human history by blinding 15.000 Bulgar soldiers of Tsar Samuel, captured prisoners in Belassitsa battle on 15 July 1015 AD.
Another sad example there is in Edessa’s municipal cemetery where the mayor ordered recently the luxurious reconstruction of a tomb belonging to former greek major Dimosthenis Athanassoglou, a member of the ultra nationalist gang РБП activated during German occupation period (1941-1944) in Aegean Macedonia against the Edessa based OHRANA organization. Athanasoglou was killed on July 1944 by unknown culprit. However according the huge marnle label engraved on tomb by Edessa’s mayor, Athanasoglou was murdered by Bulgar commitatzis.
In the nearby village of TEHOVO (Karidia), 12 km from Voden, a magnificent monument built also by local municipality in 1962, landmarks the place of another martyrdom. According the marble label two notorious members of Greek-Macedonian commitate captain Agras and captain Migas were hanged by Bulgars in 1907. However the true is that the two bandids were executed by Roman-Vlachs after trial and condemn for crimes against Macedonian people.
As you can see the same graceless monument decorates the big reception room of Edessa’s townhall where a fossilied tree trunk and a similar label reminds that the two above mentioned Greek gangsters were hanged by Bulgars.The monument was erected in 1992 by order of Edessa’s vice mayor Mr. Kitsos.
In the village of Mesimeri, 2 Km from Voden, there is the statue of priest Stojanis who, according memorial boardsign, was murdered in 1905, by Bulgars belonging to Bulgarian Commitate. Another memorial label in same village informs that death of seven inhabitants in 1905 was also caused by Bulgars who murdered them by ambush during the 1904-1908 “Macedonian struggle” between Greeks and Bulgars.
Three years ago the Greek university proffessor George Babiniotis issued a new vocabulary where the word BULGAR is underlined having a heavy insulting significanse synonymous to barbarian. In 1996 the prefector of Pella (Edessa) denied the changing of our president’s name from Greek Stoidis to Bulgarian Stojanof because such modification is forbitten by greek law and there are not Bulgars inside Greek territory.
Mr mayor we hope you’ll soon realize that existing problem of Greek-Bulgarian relations isn’t the development of mutual economic and cultural relations but the elimination of prolonging hatred against Bulgaria. In Greek libraries there are over 3.000 titles of books having exaggerated antibulgarian content. Greek political propaganda is well organized and orientated against its northern borders where the supposed perpetual enemy (Bulgaria) lurks for ever.
