Just 11 months after giving birth to her second child, pop legend Madonna embarked on a full-fledged international tour.

Eight years after her last concert tour, Madonna proved she could still storm the stage when, on June 9, she kicked off her 14-week Drowned World Tour 2001. Drawing from her latest two albums, Ray of Light and Music, the 42-year-old wife and mother of two rocked the sold-out arenas dressed alternately as a punk rocker, a geisha with a shotgun and a cowgirl grinding on a mechanical bull, among other roles.
Behind the scenes, the domineering diva was in full control of her edgy production. Months before she had pulled together her A-list crew, which included veteran backup singers Donna De Lory and Niki Haris, tour director and choreographer Jamie King and tech wizard Mike McKnight, without whom she refused to tour.
They then went through a demanding seven-week rehearsal in Los Angeles to prepare. Despite past successes together, Haris -- who had to convince Madonna not to give her a Mohawk -- was concerned the disparate elements of the show were not coming together. She feared audiences would boo them off the stage.
"Finally Madonna was like, 'Please just trust me. I've been very successful. I know what I'm doing.' " Haris told Entertainment Weekly in July. Then Haris realized who was leading the charge. "I was like, 'You know what? You're right.' "
At the show's Barcelona debut, there was nothing but cheers for the undisputed queen of pop.
