"Frances Yates relates that a monk from Macedonia, Leonardo da Pistoria, working for Cosmo de Medici, brought the Corpus Hermeticum to Florence about 1460, where it was translated by Marsilio Ficino. Michael Psellus knew of this manuscript in his day in the eleventh century, and I believe that the Corpus Hermeticum actually came from Mount Athos, which is a peninsula of Macedonia. I say this because of the mystical and Hermetic influences in religious practice and art on Athos which we have just noted, and I am also convinced that Codex B was found there by Bessarion at just about the same time as the discovery of the Corpus Hermeticum."
Hermeticism was of interest to various Christian theologians from the time of the Patristic Fathers, but only excerpts of the Hermetic texts were known. ‘Christian Hermeticism’ as a formal theological system does not develop until much later, after 1462, when Leonardo da Pistoria brought the Corpus Hermeticum from Macedonia to Florence. Faivre mentions De harmonia mundi by Francisco Giorgi Venetus, written in the early 16th century, as an early significant attempt to reconcile the teachings of the two traditions. Anhand eines solchen griechischen Manuskriptes aus dem 14. Jahrhundert (Handschrift A bzw. sog. Laurentianus 71,33), das um 1460 von dem Monch Leonardo da Pistoria mit nach Florenz gebracht worden sein soll und das nur die ersten 14 Traktate enthielt, unternahm 1463 Marsilio Ficino auf Gehei? Cosimo de’ Medicis sofort die erste lateinische Ubersetzung, die soeben begonnene Translation platonischer Dialoge abbrechend. Noch zwei Jahre vor seiner beruhmten ‘Pimander’-Edition konnte er bereits die ‘Asclepius’-Ubersetzung (1469) veroffentlichen. Bis zum Jahre 1500 wurden acht, bis zum Jahre 1641 zweiundzwanzig Editionen seines Werkes gezahlt: Ficinos Ubertragung stie? auf gro?es Interesse und eroffnete die Renaissance der Hermetik. „All scholars thought that Hermes Trismegistus lived in a very distant past, and his writings were reckoned to be the ultimate source of Plato’s thought, and some even believed that Moses himself had been decisively influenced by Hermes. The whole culture of this period is affected by Hermetism.“
