Processes of analysis during understanding of spoken language. Cortical areas work interactively at different levels of coding and receding information. The spatiotemporal patterns coming in through the auditory nerve are first coded by a frequency map, then further analyzed phonetically, semantically, and contex-tually. At each level, the analysis is at the same time a synthesis of what is expected by higher-level representations and what is already there (i.e., the results of previous analytic-synthetic processing). Hence, at each "higher" level the most probable input pattern supposedly present at the "lower" level is synthesized and fed back to the lower level. This is why the sound of a word can actually depend upon its meaning and why the meaning can depend upon the context.
