As part of the ongoing review initiated yesterday at the Prime Minister's meeting, the Home Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have decided to reinstate those categories of visa clearance from Bulgaria and Romania which are not in question and do not put at risk the integrity of the immigration control.
The suspension of visas for managed migration employment schemes, including for the self-employed, will remain, pending the outcome of the inquiry being undertaken by Ken Sutton. This will include any applications already lodged on which a decision has not been reached.
The consideration of applications for other categories (including visitors, business visitors, students, au pairs and settlement) will recommence from Tuesday 13 April 2004.
Notes for editors:
1. Visa services in Bulgaria and Romania were temporarily suspended on 30 March, following allegations of improper handling of applications from those seeking to enter the UK under the provisions of the European Community Association Agreements (ECAA).
2. The managed migration employment/self employment schemes for which visa applications remain suspended are ECAA, Work Permits, Seasonal Agricultural Workers, Sector Based Scheme and Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.
3. Media enquiries to the Home Office press office on 020 7273 4545 or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office press office on 020 7008 3100.
