Could we finally see movement on the feature film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? The late AdamsDouglasAdams was working with Austin Powers and Meet the Parents director Jay Roach on an adaptation before he met an untimely end at 50. The picture then sort of fell into the nether reaches of development hell, with Roach again and again saying he wanted to do it, but no progress ever happening.
Now Spyglass Entertainment, who partnered with Disney on the film five years ago, have set a director, and they gone back to Britain for their choice. Known as "Hammer and Tongs" when making commercials and videos (like the utterly and insanely charming video for Coffee and TV by Blur), writer-director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith will work with Chicken Run writer Karey Kirkpatrick, who has polished the last draft Adams worked on (before writing with Roach Adams had also cranked out drafts for Ivan Reitman and Mike Nesmith, the Monkee whose family invented White Out).
"We finally cracked the story, and hired these clever English fellows to make sure that the picture is visually inventive and funny and accessible to contemporary audiences while still connected to the book Douglas wrote almost 25 years ago," Spyglass' Roger Birnbaum said.
The film, which will list Douglas Adams as an executive producer, will have a start date set soon. Keep an eye on Hammer and Tongs' website (which has some of their great videos for acts like Beck and Fatboy Slim) for more updates in coming days.
