About port trunking
Port trunking allows you to aggregate multiple ports into a single group, effectively combining the bandwidth into a single connection. Port trunking also allows you to create multi-gigabit pipes to transport traffic through the highest traffic areas of your network. For example, you can aggregate three gigabits ports into a three-gigabit trunk port.
Trunk ports have several features:
Shared traffic load.
Address-based traffic sorting, which keeps packets in the correct order.
Fault tolerance. If a port in a trunk port fails, the remaining ports will continue forwarding traffic. Recovery is not limited by Spanning Tree convergence time.
Support for any number of same-speed connections in a group. The group is not restricted to a single module in a switch.
In other words, you can aggregate gigabit ports on a switch even if they are in different modules.
Up to eight trunk ports per switch.
About trunk port configuration
Trunk port configuration is a simple process if you follow the procedures in this document. There are three basic steps:
Create trunk ports on the switches you are aggregating bandwidth between.
Assign ports to the trunk ports.
Enable the ports.
There are a few things you need to know before you create trunk ports:
The switches do not have a link discovery protocol. When creating a trunk port, you must verify that the ports in a trunk port on one switch are physically connected to the ports in the trunk port on the other switch.
If one end of the connection is in a trunk port, the other end of the connection should be in the same trunk port. If it is not, the forwarding behavior of the trunk port will be unpredictable.
You should disable the ports in a trunk port until both ends of the link are configured.
All ports in a trunk port must be the same speed. This means you cannot aggregate 10/100Base-TX or 100Base-FX module ports with gigabit ports.
