Concerning Bulgarian relations with Venice a number of characteristic documents have come down to us. For instance, we learn that in 1352,Doge Andrea Dandolo
sent an embassy to Tsar Ivan Alexander in Tarnovo , to negotiate a freshtrade treaty. This was signed on 4 October 1352 , and includes several interesting features.Thus , the possessions of Venetian citizens are guarantied agains plunder or seizures in the event of shipwreck or death.In the event of anoffence being commited by one member of Venetian community, the other members are not held collectibly responsible , nor for each other's debts.The houses of Venetians were immune from arbitraryentry or search.The Venetians had the right to build churches and trading depots anywhere they wished, even in the interior hinterland in the country. Customs and dutieswere fixed at three percent.....
