Well it had to happen. The worst Best Picture in history to wrap up one of the worst years for film.
We here at Fennec were almost not going to have the Fennecus and Apex awards this year due to the appalling lack of quality films. By the end of summer, the only film eligible for Best Picture (based on our scoring system) was Howl's Moving Castle. But we decided to continue after seeing such wonderful late year entries as Brokeback Mountain, The Constant Gardener and A History Of Violence.
But the Academy said that the best Hollywood had to offer was Crash. And we just can't agree with that. And neither can most critics (or people with any taste whatsoever). For proof just look in the latest issue of Premiere magazine. In the yearly roundup of the 100 best (of the most visible) movies of the year, there is Crash languishing down at number 58. That is behind War Of The Worlds, Revenge Of The Sith and The Family Stone for perspective. (The other four nominees for Best Picture are at numbers 2 through 5.) In fact, 8 of the 15 critics sampled say its "Not Recommended" and 2 actually label it "A Must To Avoid."
Now it might be homophobia, or it might not, we just don't know. It may be stupid actors voting for the actor-rich movie, we don't know. Whatever the reason, this piece of shit has forced me to do something I didn't think possible. I give up.
I cannot bring myself to update this website saying that the film the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences selected was the best of the year. Therefore, the Fennec Awards Database is closing down. Effective immediately there will be no more updates to the film side (the Tonys section will have an update later this year).
I had no idea that my personal joy at going to the movies and seeing them rewarded with Oscars could be so irreparably destroyed. But tonight it has been. I see roughly 200 per year (and pay for each and every one of them) and have paid for this website out of my personal pocket for the last 10 years. And after this travesty, it just doesn't seem worth it to continue if this is the crap the Academy will acclaim.
I want to thank all of you that have visited us over the years, and hope that you may continue to find your joy in the darkened halls of your local cineplex, although I know that is not likely since the average time from theater to video is around 3 months now. I want to thank the people who have been invited to vote with me over the years. And I want to thank the filmmakers that have given the world their unique visions through the years.
To quote one of the truly best films of the year…Good Night, And Good Luck.

От Fennec почти се бяхме отказали да представяме наградите Fennecus и Apex тази година поради липсата на качествени филми. Може да е хомофобия, или не, ние не знаем.* Може да е глупаво актьорско гласуване за наситения с актьори филм, не знаем. Каквато и да е причината, тази гнусотия ме принуди да направя нещо, което мислех за невъзможно. Предавам се.
Не мога да подновя новините в сайта, казвайки, че филмът, който the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences избра, е най-добрият филм за годината.
Затова сайта Fennec Awards Database се затваря, от днес ефективно няма да има повече новини във филмовата част.
