Hyperimmunity
Jenny: I've heard moms also talk about how their child never got sick.
They went through flu seasons without their child catching one thing. Evan was
this way before I knew he had autism. He was so healthy when all of his friends
were sick and then all of a sudden, BOOM! He head a fever a week for a year.
Dr. Jerry: This is what I call hyperimmunity. When the immune system gets
stressed, it can go into a mode of hypervigilance. People who live out on the
streets can be a good example of having a hyperimmune system. Many of them
are heavy drinkers/drug users with very poor nutrition. They can remain in a
"non-ill" status up to a point and than all of a sudden they crush and end up in
the emergency room. For a long time their immune system went into a hyperdrive
mode and was able to keep up despite significant stressors until just collapsed on
itself. So I think this hyperimmune system is similar to what develops in some of
our children and they never get sick. Remember, I can see just the opposite of this
in my clinic. These are the children who are sick all the time. They come to me having had
sixty or seventy different courses of antibiotics through the past three
years. Their immune systems are dysfunctional, too, just in a manner that makes them very susceptible to disease."
