President Georgi Parvanov unveiled a monument to seven American soldiers in
the town of Kula. "It is with great delay that I am doing this, since the
pilots died on May 6, 1944, and we are paying tribute to them now," the
President said. "They died so that Europe be united and prosperous, and that
Bulgaria becomes a member of the big family," he added. After the President,
US Naval Attache addressed the people in Bulgarian, saying he was happy our
countries were allies again, like in the good old times. President Parvanov
paid a floral tribute to the local monument to Russian soldiers, as well as to
the wall of fame with the names of the Bulgarians who died defending the town
of Kula, as well as to the Katyusha monument. In his opinion, the residents of
the frontier region, needed a different legislation to stimulate the young and
enterprising people, living there. The entire town came out in the streets to
see the President. 85-year-old Yoncho Yonchev, wearing his old military
uniform, managed to approach the President and asked him "Who are you?"
"I am the Bulgarian President," the head of state introduced himself with a smile.
