Hib vaccine introduction

Immunization with Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine was introduced in western Europe in the early 1990s. By 2003, 29 countries had adopted Hib vaccines in their national immunization programmes. These include six countries of central and eastern Europe (Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia). None of the newly independent states has introduced Hib vaccine, mainly because of the high cost.

WHO/Europe has supported surveillance studies on Hib disease in Bulgaria, Poland and the Russian Federation. Rapid assessments of Hib disease burden were conducted in Albania, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Analysis of data from 72 studies in the countries of the European Region has shown that a higher incidence of Hib meningitis in children under the age of 5 was documented in western Europe than in central and eastern Europe.

Travelers over two years of age should be sure that the following vaccines are up to date: MMR (for measles, mumps, and rubella); DTaP or Td (for diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis), OPV (for polio), HbCV (for haemophilus influenza B), and HBV (for hepatitis B). For travelers going to Western Europe, Hepatitis A vaccine and immune globulin is recommended. Those headed to Southern Europe should also consider the typhoid vaccine. Some countries may deny entrance to travelers arriving from South America and sub-Saharan Africa without a certificate of vaccination for yellow fever. For more region-specific information on vaccination requirements, as well as recommendations on immunizations and prophylaxis, consult the CDC (see below) in the US or the equivalent in your country.
