Alfa Romeo and Gta Racing Team Nordauto are determined to defend their lead in both the FIA European Touring Car Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships. From the next meeting in Pergusa, on September 21st and 22nd, the Italian make’s works team will line up a fourth Alfa Romeo 156 Gta for Roberto Colciago. The 34-year-old Italian driver will take part in the final three meetings of the season with the task to support Nordauto regular drivers Fabrizio Giovanardi and Nicola Larini who are currently first and second in the Championship classification. This will mark Colciago’s debut in the 2002 FIA ETCC, after he was a regular competitor and also a race winner in the European Championship at the wheel of an AGS-run Audi A4 Quattro. In 2000 the Italian was a title contender in the European Super Touring Cup, winning five rounds. Last year he finished sixth in the FIA European Super Touring Championship with two wins, at Magny-Cours and Budapest. In the current season Colciago is also committed to defend his 2001 Swedish Touring Car Championship title for Audi; he his lying third in the classification, only two points behind the leader Tomas Engstrцm and one point behind second-placed Jan Nilsson. They are now facing a kind of shoot-out in the STCC finale that will take place the week before Pergusa in Mantorp Park. “I am really happy for this unexpected call. It’s not a secret that my goal is to get back to the ETCC and now I have the opportunity of doing it with the championship’s leading team. It’s just for the three final events, but this might lead to something else for next year. Obviously I will do my best to be up to the task and hopefully I will give my contribution for clinching the titles,” said Colciago who has already tested his new car at the Alfa Romeo test track in Balocco. “I don’t think it will be difficult for me to be fast. The only problem is the gearbox; after I am using the sequential since many years, I have to learn back how to use a H-pattern…” In the picture: Colciago happy after his win in the 2001 FIA ETCC round at Budapest.
