Indeed....In the 1850s - 1870's there was huge debate among the Bulgarian inteligentsia on what dialects should become the base for the literary language.

Eventually the proponents of the dialect from Tarnovo - Gabrovo region (north-east Bulgaria) managed to impose their dialect...There was a vivid debate not only on the sounding but also on the letters (for instance the i - iota letter and the h - ita letter).

It must be noted that those who won the day were Russian educated and indeed both the graphic and the sounding of literary Bulgarian is deliberately looking towards Russian.

Another clear point that was made then was the desire to look for the strictest possible distinction of Bulgarian from Serbian.
