Britney Spears realised she'd made a terrible mistake in drunkenly marrying a pal just hours after the 5am ceremony on Saturday, tearily wailing, "Oh my God, what have I done?"

The 22-year-old pop star shocked the world when it emerged yesterday she had wed childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander on a whim during a boozy New Years visit to Las Vegas - and Spears quickly took full blame for the affair. She reportedly said hours after the ceremony at Little White Wedding chapel, which she attended in a baseball cap and torn jeans, "I am so sorry. This was such a stupid idea," as she fell into Alexander's arms. A source tells Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper the groom was similarly repentant, "Jason kept saying, 'I'm sorry, I got drunk.' There was nothing else he could say."

The source reveals the post-marriage celebrations at friend George Maloof’s Nines Steak House quickly turned sour, explaining, "They'd been steaming drunk and this was the big comedown. It was awful. There was a real feeling of sadness. No one was dancing. Everyone was on a downer. It was almost as if someone had died. People just had their heads down as if they couldn't believe what was going on. Britney spent most of the time going to the bathroom. She was in floods of tears, her face was puffy and bloated. She and Jason kept going to the bar. She was hugging him and they were both crying their eyes out. They kept apologising to each other, with each blaming themselves for what had happened. It looked as if they were still hammered from the night before." After being bawled out by her bodyguard Big Mo, Britney then had to face the wrath of her staunchly religious mother Lynne, who had flown in from their home town Kentwood, Louisiana. The source continues, "That's when the s*** really hit the fan. She was going crazy, blaming Maloof, screaming, 'How could you encourage my child to get married?'
She was also laying into Britney and Jason, asking, 'What the hell have you guys been doing?' She couldn't believe they were still drinking. Then she and Britney ended up crying."

The father of Alexander - a committed college American football player - who also shocked by the marriage. Dennis, who spent most of yesterday discussing the wedding with Britney's father Jamie at his Kentwood flat, says, "Jason was supposed to be spending New Year with us, but then last minute he told us he was going to Vegas instead with Britney. But, hell, I don't blame him. I would have done the same. If J.Lo had called me up and invited me to New York, I would have been straight there." The pair - who apparently hatched their plan whilst drinking on Friday night whilst partying at Maloof's Palm Casino Hotel’s Ghostbar club - applied for an annulment of their marriage late on Saturday, which should be finalised when the courts reopen today.
